Run Your Laptop From The Cockpit With Your Smartphone

Found and installed a great Android app. which enables you to operate your laptop remotely from the cockpit with your Android smartphone.

Quick initiation from your smartphone and the laptop screen is duplicated on your phone, accepting ALL commands. Zoom via finger pinch etc.

Keep your laptop safely below connected to your local Wi-Fi network and use your smartphone in the cockpit to access EVERYTHING on your laptop.

Not sure yet,but I think you can also control your PC/laptop remotely over the internet as well. The name of the app is "Splashtop".

Great app. at $ 9.99

One good free alternative: http://www.pocketcloud.com/remotedesktop
(Free Android app)

...others exist too. No need to plug commercial apps.

zeehag..

That was just my point... keep your laptop safe below and access it from your smartphone in the cockpit..

Jesper..

I have no reason to ´plug´ anything, just good info. Anyway, I´d hardly call $9.- commercial, resession or not. But thanks for another good tip, did´nt know about that one.

Jesper..

BUT,I agree, PocketCloud is better although the FULL version sells at $20.-
I have installed the basic FREE version which looks very promising.

Another option is TeamViewer. Free for non-commercial use.

Re: Run Your Laptop From The Cockpit With Your Smartphone

Quite incredible the number of possibilities and new features which has opened with the introduction of Android apps...

I now seem to have my old boat moored in Ubatuba and can also view all the AIS traffic in the area at the same time, all created by the new iAIS app on my Galaxy...

I am also experimenting,as you saw with apps. capable of running my PC/laptop remotely, both on my LAN as well as over the internet. Only your imagination is the limit of it´s use. I did a complete chart conversion with GE2KAP using my Galaxy.

The phone has perhaps too small a screen for navigation in the cockpit,
but using the larger 10" Samsung pad could be a valid solution to keep your laptop safely below and run it from the cockpit via LAN and the Galaxy.

I am testing out Splashtop Remote and PocketCloud at the moment and think so far my money´s on the PocketCloud owing to the easy way to pan around the map itself without moving the whole frame. Splashtop Remote has a very ackward and very small button to do the same, impossible from a cockpit.

Barnie..

I am sure there is. If not,use a transparent plastic envelope, improvise!

I just had my local shoe maker prepare an attractive wallet in leather with a velcro fastened flap for my Galaxy S II. Well protected and feels great!
Cost? about $13.-

Sinbad
Do you know if there is a minimum Android version you need to run either Splashtop or PocketCloud, please? I may be able to obtain a smartphone second hand for use on my boat.

Re: Run Your Laptop From The Cockpit With Your Smartphone

Tony..

Can´t remember exactly but you can check it in the Google Play store if you do a ´Google´. In any case, unless the phone is VERY old,you should be OK and you can also upgrade to v. 4.3 from the internet.
Splashtop Remote cost me $ 5.- and PocketCloud is free for the basic version so it won´t break the bank.
