S57 Error when Prepare All Enc

Eliminated all updates for US4NC11M after .006 and that chart seems to process normally. No error messages for any of the problem charts.

Also the error file says another process is using the file. Do we know what process that is and can I turn that process off, so that the offending file is automatically deleted as it seems that is what is required?

Let Windows Explorer show you the dates for the files. Then you can see which one is the latest.



US5MA27M.005 is the latest. OpenCPN seems to check the date and time stamps to figure out which files to use for rebuilding the SENC.

it's just the extension of the chart data file.

xxnnnnnn.000 the base chart

.001 first update
.002 second update, etc.

Received the following response from NOAA:

"OCS Inquiry: 33195

Original message: Receiving processing errors on 3 ENC charts: US4MD40M, US4NC11M, and US5MA27M. The errors are encountered in the OpenCPN chart plotting software during initialization. Eliminating the more recent update files makes the problem go away as follows:
US4MD40M: all updates after .003
US4NC11M: all updates after .006
US5MA27M: all updates after .004

This may be a problem in OpenCPN and is being investigated. Have you received any reports of these errors from other users or developers? I re=downloaded the files on and got the same problem.

OCS response: Thank you for your inquiry. I'm sorry you are having trouble with the updates to these charts. We have not had any feedback from any other user or distributor about problems with any updates to these charts. I have installed these charts in my version of OpenCPN (4.6.0) without any problems.

I have analyzed the update errors on US5MS27.
I believe the update files from NOAA contain erroneous encoding.


I would like to discuss with a technical contact at NOAA. Maybe "Sean" can redirect me. How did you contact NOAA with your problem report?

Upon realizing that I would hear nothing from NOAA until Monday, earliest, I decided to look deeper into our code. And I found a long-standing bug that is triggered by the particular update file we are looking at. Our helper library (GDAL) had never seen that type of sequenced update instruction set before. Easily corrected, once understood.


Thanks for bird-dogging this one. Fix will appear in the next Beta.
