squiddio plugin

[rgleason]

I have found that squiddio 1.3.10 after the tarball is downloaded, Imports properly, then installs properly and when Enabled, and I find it does work in Ubuntu Bionic 18.04 showing Noaa Weather Bouys and Noaa Ship Reports.

I was excited to find the Squiddio pi, but it keeps crashing my install of OpenCPN. Windows 10; OpenCPN 5.2.4: Squiddio 1.0.11. Same thing happening on my laptop and PC.

Just updated to O5.6 and installed the new Squiddio. Since OpenDraw 1.8.7.1, Squiddio icons have been "smooshed" when loading the POIs in OpenDraw layer. Doesn't happen in OpenCPN Waypoint layer.

Happens on both my RPi and Mac installations. Was hoping O5.6 would solve the issue, but it is still happening. See screenshot.

Try OD 1.8.8.1, it is in the master catalog. The icons have been changed a bit. Can you tell us if it makes a difference?

OD v1.8.10.0 seems to work for me on Linux. It is available in the alpha cloudsmith at the moment and it will be in the beta stream soon. Can you give that a go and see if it fixes the issue?

I have to turn on CatalogExpert, as I'm on O5.60... Where do I do that?

OD 1.8.10.0 did fix the icon issue, however, after I cleared out the old points and then reissued them from Squiddio into OpenDraw Textpoint. Now it's fine.

Also, chart zooming is slightly slower and more choppy, but now that I've turned off "show name", it's no longer a noticeable difference.

Yes, Steve, I have noticed that drawing all the POI names particularly for large zoomed out areas is impractical, and suggest that it be unchecked, and to favor hovering over the POI.

I think the issue is todo with the single threading of the application, including plugins, and the amount of work that has to be done, independantly by the plugins, to display their information. If this function were in mainline OCPN code it may be faster, but could hit similar issues.


I have noticed that on the Pi where there are 4 processing units the one used by OCPN can quite often max out particularly when receiving and displaying AIS. This is exacerbated with each plugin that is loaded as all registered interfaces have to be called in each plugin in sequence, including the display functions.


With this in mind the display of icons is the minimum to show there is something there, and the use of rollover to display further information should consume the least amount of resources. From the plugin perspective all objects have to be tested to see if they are on the current display and processed if they are. This does reduce the overhead, but for wide views there is still considerable work that has to be done. One thing that 'may' help is reducing the size of the area you have loaded with squiddio information, particularly if actively navigating at the time.

While working with Squiddio and OD, I've discovered that Squiddio (by itself displaying as "Waypoints") displays the name of the POI regardless of whether "Show Name" is checked or not. It does operate correctly in ODraw Textpoint.

This is on OCPN 5.6.0 on Mac running Catalina.
