Re: squiddio plugin

I found this post very promising. Squiddio is quite mature now.

Re: squiddio plugin

Actually we need a picture and more information about version, os and actions to get the window from several users. Also describing what happens, in this thread. Then make a Tracker request and paste in the CF thread/ post which best describes the problem. Thank you.

Re: https://squidd.io plugin

Squiddio using squiddio_pi-0.7-win32

Win 10 with Openpn v4.8.2

First check this out! Squidd.io has grown up, look at those features.
http://squidd.io/faq#opencpn_setup

Also see better route planning http://blog.squidd.io/

I am able to download POI without entering my user name and API number in Preferences.

I am able to create a new destination by selecting new destination, when connected to the internet, and then logging into Squiddio with my user and pass. Then enter the data for the POI and save.

I am able to Hide the Squidd.io POI by right click and pick Hide POI.

Problem: Regarding Preferences and entering User name and API, I was unable to get the cursor to go into the fields. I do not know what the problem is yet.

Future Improvements: Ability to create a new POI and save it locally without online access (in offline mode). Then when internet is available be able to upload.

Re: squiddio plugin

Just figured out how to unlock the User and API fields under Preferences.
Just select to send messages to friends "once a day". Now you can enter User & API.

squidd.io has the ability to send and recieve logs with friends.

There is one somewhat bothersome thing about enabling this feature. The log dialogue box becomes present always on the chart!

We really need some way to Show/Hide this when send & receive logs is enabled. Even an option for a second Log icon to toggle show hide, or just a right click selection would be fine.

Also I would like to see a POI Log for new and modified POI when the user is "Offline". Then when connected to the internet these changes and new additions can be uploaded to the website. It would be much more convenient and I think the database would grow faster.

Re: squiddio plugin

Stimulated by Rick's comments I checked out the sqiddio_pi and it is encouraging to see how far it had progressed.
Had the same issue to unlock account - seems like an overprotected entry logic.

some addl comment (to already mentioned by Rick):
- would like to have the squiddo icons on a 'squiddo - layer' rather than just like normal waypoints.
- would expect the squiddo icon in the toolbar to switch all visible squiddo references on/off
- for charterers and delivery skippers it would be nice to enable changing vessel data in preferences (and send them with next refresh) rather than the tedious update profile options in the portal.

just my 2cents

Re: squiddio plugin

Good points. I'd like to see those improvements.

Also what exactly is a "log" how is one created? What data is used?
1. Is it an entry made on the website?
2. Can it just be a position sent from the gps? With a brief message?

I need to learn more.
How does a friend sign up ?

This was mostly done to spare users from having to obtain an API key (hence register on the web site) unless they want to use the Log feature. I.e. if the user sees 2 open fields, they will feel compelled to fill them. The logic could be removed if turns out to create more confusion than anything. Should I add a feature request to the tracker?

this has been entered as a feature request

right now the toolbar icon triggers the preferences dialog box. The logic is to give easy access to some preferences that are frequently updated, such as the types of POI to be downloaded. Would an additional toggle button ("Hide/Show all sQuiddio destinations") perhaps at the top of the dialog box do the job?

I suppose this can be done. I think there is an API call on squidd.io to update a boat profile, but if not it could be added. Will add this as a feature request. Perhaps you can indicate what fields of the Boat form would be useful in the plugin?

Re: squiddio plugin

From my viewpoint, Squiddio is not a suitable replacement for Active Captain. In most instances it requires internet access to view the relevant data, its user interface in OpenCPN is not as user friendly and nor does it contain the anchorage detail that Active Captain does, and there is very little feedback from sailors visiting the anchorages.

Perhaps I am not familiar enough with Squiddio yet, but I would like to see something that updates the anchorage database on my hard disk rather than having to access the internet - which is not a possibility if you are cruising remote parts of the world.

Suggesting that Squiddio can be used over a satellite phone is ridiculous - it would run you broke and you would have no hair left with the frustrations of poor connectivity.

Logs are created by the plugin periodically (frequency defined in preferences) by transmitting NMEA values to squidd.io via the sQuiddio APIs.
Refer to the SetNmeaSentence method here for more info.

Quote:
1. Is it an entry made on the website?
there is that option. Logs are also automatically created by interfacing things like SPOT tracker with squiddio.

Quote:
2. Can it just be a position sent from the gps? With a brief message?
yes, the Log currently includes lat/lon coordinates from the GPS, SOG and COG. It could be enhanced to include any of the other NMEA variables available to plugins (depth, wind speed etc.), and perhaps in the future a user message.

users can invite other users by email from the sQuiddio Dashboard (see green button in the top bar of the web site - only when logged in). These new invited users, once registered, appear in the follow-list of the Dashboard and can be tracked on the chart using the plugin.
