Does the GPS work with other programs?

Have you tried different com ports?

Re: Tablet with built in GPS.

An earlier post said there was no "COM" port involved in getting this up and running. I've tried the GPS on other programs on the computer and they work just fine.

Re: Tablet with built in GPS.

Not an answer, but another problem. I have a USB GPS that works with my Windows 10 computer and Opencpn. I also have a Remix Mini Android OS computer running the Opencpn Android program. When hooked to the GPS puck I can go to "connections / Debug" screen and I see NMEA sentences coming in, but nothing happens on the chart. FWIW I'm using the same NOAA charts on both computers. In the debug screen the sentence's begin with (Virtual), then the data, and the sentence has a checksum at the end. Any suggestions to make the chart move?

URL to the photo of the debug screen. Thank you for offering the help. Let me know if there's anything else I need to try.

Grady...
The pix is too small to read.

Will you transcribe manually (here) one of the virtual lines output in the debug output window?

Nice woodwork, by the way

Thanks
Dave

Re: Tablet with built in GPS.

With reading glasses:

Code:
(Virtual:) $OCRMC,,V, Lat, Lon,2.80,323,,,,*55
so no time nor date and a GPS receiver warning:"V"
Latitude has some oscillation, so at least this looks like receiving something, Longitude fix..
No other NMEA sentence, just RMC

Grady...

The GPS in the table is not getting a good fix. You can recognise this due to the "V" in the RMC messages. For a good fix, that will be "A".

Try taking the tablet outside, with a clear skyview.

Sorry, I started a new job in October and have been working 16 hour days ever since. So I've had no time to hang out here.

Here's what I know. My Lenovo Miix2 8" Win8 tablet has an internal GPS, and works well with OpenCPN as long as I use the GeolocationTCP program to bridge the API. It has some quirks, and if you search around here you'll see them discussed in multiple places on Windows Tablet discussions. But as long as you steer around the quirks, it is 100% reliable.

I also own an Acer Switch 10 tablet/laptop hybrid, a fantastic little machine. BUT, it does NOT have an internal GPS, and I've never seen a version that has it. Maybe you do have GPS, but I really suspect that you instead have a GNSS driver that pulls the approximate location from your WiFi connection. Here's how you can tell: When you run Geolocation or Centrifuse, are you getting a new NMEA sentence every second like clockwork? Or are the sentences updating every 20-60 seconds? If the former, then you do have a GPS chip in the computer. If the latter, then you don't, and your computer is just using the WiFi to estimate its location.

If your machine is getting its location from Wifi, then when you are in OpenCPN the ownship icon will turn red whenever a sentence comes in, but if it goes a few seconds without an update, it turns back to gray. That seems to be what you're describing.

So the behavior you are seeing is consistent with no GPS in your machine (like with my Switch 10), and getting your approximate location from the Wifi.

Your best solution may be to buy a USB GPS dongle. Be sure to get one with drivers for Windows 10.

Re: Tablet with built in GPS.

Rhythmdoctor,

you probably nailed it down. The data sheets of the ACER Switch 10 don't show any GPS. And there are some test reports which point out the same.

Would explain as well the missing time stamp in the RMC message: when you have a GPS fix you have time. The fix includes Time.
