Templates to save current config in display

Ok, I have all my current charts used on screen, got the scales where I want etc. Now I create a new template, and click apply, the screen changes to not what I thought I saved, so reset all over again but did not click apply, closed the program and reopened, clicked on the template but still does not give me what I thought was saved. So, obviously done something wrong, ?

Re: Templates to save current config in display

What you got wrong...is what's included in a template and what's not included.
Read up about templates here-> https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/about/ver500.html
Scroll down to "The Options-Display-Templates Tab".

A good response to find what the templates really do. Thanks.

The problem I see is the misconception given by the wording that it is a 'recovery' mechanism. (As shown in the image). The use described in the above link is quite different than having a 'safe' configuration. I suspect a disconnect between the intended use and the implementation.

Would be interesting to see if anyone uses this feature.

And, getting a bit off track, we have feature requests to add capabilities to OpenCPN. I think we should have the ability to request removal of the mundane ones that are creeping into the program.

No, there is no difference between concept and implementation here.

This is not the back-up or snapshot of a complete setting for a given individual machine. Never was perceived like such.

It is about "canned" presentation definitions. Which allows for example to play with settings of vector charts in order to learn or to have a predefined "look" for planning, approach/berthing or underway.
Imagine giving classes about OpenCPN and you can tell the listeners/learners to play with settings, destroying settings and with two clicks one can be back to start.

Re: Templates to save current config in display

Without wanting to lose my current chart settings, why does the screen change my charts layouts whenever I press the apply button to save a setting ?

I agree that it works as intended but the wording that came through with implementation of 'return to a known safe configuration' does not describe the feature's use and is misleading. It's the wording in the implementation that I am referring to, not the implementation of the feature.

My poor choice of words .. sorry.

Re: Templates to save current config in display

OK, more issues,
Do I assume that quilting is only for charts that are on the chart tab, so if I cruise out of the current area and am using look ahead mode, I still need to click on a chart bar to see the detail, if so, then all charts in the area to be cruised should be pre opened to the desired scale prior to entering these areas and this would not create any chart handling confusion later .?

The less amount of time messing about on computers when navigating the better specially in inclement conditions.

Re: Templates to save current config in display

mcm..
If quilting is on you should not need to click any chart bar, except for shifting between raster or vector charts.
New charts are loaded while the boat is moving.
For more details you've to zoom in.
If you desire more details for a certain zoom level you can adjust the zoom/scale weighting. See Options->Display->Advanced. Adjust the values to fit what you like. (Also the key shortcut "D" can be used.)
Be aware a very high level may have impact on the performance for a slow PC.

Or did I misunderstood your note?

Would you like to propose a more intuitive wording? Now is definitely a good time....

Thanks

I propose the wording as on the attached.

However, there are issues with the templates page.

1) What is the Template Status box used for? I can't get it to show anything.
2) The first information now in the box under 'Saved Templates' (including the three buttons) should not be there. It tells the user how to create the configuration.
3) I suggest the wording and buttons be moved to the top box and labeled 'Template Creation' (or words to that effect). Then, once a template has been created it should appear under Saved Templates.

Any better?
