Re: Test Polauto by using OpenCpn w/o instruments

I downloaded and am trying to use V5 (in english, "instalpolautov5anglais.exe").

When it tries to add a new speed value to the table, it seems to be adding the % difference, not the speed of the vessel, which is obviously a bug as the data is not valid.

If I need to post my config let me know, but I didnt do anything too special, and it seemed to work ok with previous versions, but now it is inserting nonsense into the polar table, not the speed of the boat.

If I should post somewhere else, please let me know that also.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Test Polauto by using OpenCpn w/o instruments

Hi,

I downloaded from the links that rgleason posts, at the top of that page.

As for the issue, I cannot reproduce right now as I have to have the boat moving to get data to record, and we are at anchor now.

The issue was that while recording data, I think that the % value difference is what was getting added into the wind values in the polar chart. The items I circled are all invalid data, and as best as I could see, the values that were being inserted were coming from the % difference as shown on the left (also circled).

Next time we move the boat I can try to capture the issue actually happening and post, but will be a week or so before we move again.

Re: Test Polauto by using OpenCpn w/o instruments

Hi, Kiltym
I try to answer in english ( not easy for me )
If you choose 25% for the new value ( the boat speed )
The value add will be :
(25*this value+(100-25)*the old value) /100
Exemple
with 25%
The old value is 6nds, the new value ( the average) is 7nds
(7*25+75*6)/100=6.25
The new value add will be 6.25
with 100%
The new value add will be 7
I think there no bug with this.
Patrick

First, thanks for following up, and I realize English is not your first language, so thanks even more.

I now understand. Thanks.

One suggestion perhaps, if the old value is 0, which in my case they were, perhaps just insert the current value instead of averaging the values since the 0 is not valid anyway.

Thank again for the explanation.

Kiltym,
You can also put 1s in the "time average on" and the current value will replace
directly the old.
You can also put some value with the manual mode, and then go on auto mode.
Best, Patrick.

Hi,
The speed of NMEA was 4800bds and not 38400
Your configuration run with this speed???
Thanks
JP

The data comes into polauto via NavMonPC. 38400 works just fine.

Re: Test Polauto by using OpenCpn w/o instruments

kiltym, we'd be very interested in your experience and results when you record in steady conditions with known or 0 currents. You can post here please? If you develop a good polar file, also please post as txt or doc with make and model of sailboat. Please advise of what settings you found worked best, as this will be a learning experience for everyone. This is the first free software that I know of that will record and permits various settings, with a visual interface, and is dedicated to polars, Thanks to Patrick!
(--apart from NavMonPC which also records, is excellent, and is a more general purpose multi-tool, that I also use.)

Will do.

Unfortunately the three week trip across the Pacific I thought there was a bug so stopped recording data. Once we are sailing again I hope to start collecting the data again. Once I have something worthwhile, will certainly share it.

Re: Test Polauto by using OpenCpn w/o instruments

Thanks Kiltym.

For others: When I use NavMonPc I set up two virtual ports with different Com Ports, one is for Opencpn and one for Polauto. To speed things up I set both ports to 38400, since we are just running a text file. Also in the Play Nmea file area of NavMonPC I set it to 10x speed or 100x speed, so you don't waste time reading the file.

Re: Test Polauto by using OpenCpn w/o instruments

Hello, I have run through my NMEA files a handful of times to try to get a feel for the filters, I have a few questions.

I'm not too sure how the filters are working.
I understand the percentage new value with old.
I understand the time average.

Do the Max difference settings control the result of the final number by disallowing any number in the selected max range above the existing polar number? These settings would be beneficial to prevent surfing speeds down wave fronts? or temporary wind gusts? and variation in wind direction? How do these settings affect the average numbers that are calculated with the time average feature?

Can someone explain the recording Range options for wind speed and wind direction?
