Transfering waypoints

Thanks for the Opencpn update to 5.6.0, I have moved to a new laptop and are wondering can I transfer all my saved waypoints from the previous laptop to the new one which is running Opencpn 5.6.0?

Re: Transfering waypoints

Buried in the wiki...

Three ways to synchronize:
  • From the Route & Mark Manager > Route Tab, select “Export all visible” or highlight select routes and “Export Selected” to a gpx folder. Then use saved gpx file to import the Routes to another computer. For Marks pick the Waypoint Tab, select “Export all visible” or highlight select waypoints and “Export selected” to a gpx folder. Then import waypoints from the other computer.
  • Copy the navobj.xml file to the second computer's navobj.xml file, which will overwrite your routes and marks on that computer. If you are connected via a network you can make a batch file to do this.
  • To copy all waypoints or routes, make a copy & rename the navobject.xml file to .gpx file and import the waypoints, routes and/or tracks. This does all waypoints/routes/tracks at once.
The navobj.xml file resides in the same folder as the opencpn.ini settings file, under the OpenCPN User folder. For windows this is usually “C:\programdata\opencpn\”. The navobject.xml file is in in fact a .gpx file containing all waypoints/routes/tracks. See Navigation Data Backup for more information.

Re: Transfering waypoints

I assume the same would work to transfer to another system (eg Navionics)?

Why not provide a direct link to the Question in FAQ
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...other_computer

Incidently, you can hit Alt-F to search FAQ on a word, which is a very quick way to find something.

Re: Transfering waypoints

What? OpenCPN is not Navionics. You are welcome to try whatever you want. Sorry.

Because I didn't see the hover-over for the link at the time I was looking for such a link.

Your mileage may vary, but I've had some success transferring routes between different apps.

I regularly transfer waypoints and routes between OpenCPN (i) to Opencpn on other devices [NO problem!] and (ii) to/from my Furuno chartplotter.

My Furuno requires rou/rat files. I use GPSUtility (PC program) to convert. The only problem is most OpenCPN waypoint symbols do not convert to Furuno. So I use GPSUtility to batch change symbols before porting over to Furuno. Minor PIA, but works for me.

I do not use waypoints or routes on Navionics - - I find Navionics too limited for this. I would expect, however, some OpenCPN waypoint symbols to not translate well to Navionics. Others will have to provide info on this.

So that you can do your planning on a laptop that you leave in a dry location.
Then transfer your routes and waypoints to Navionics on a tablet or phone that you can have in the cockpit.

I do my planning on OpenCPN on my laptop, then transfer to my Android tablet (and/or phone) running Android OpenCPN... (I also do planning on the Android OpenCPN on my tablet).

I do the same, but s/Android/Apple/ and s/OpenCPN/SEAiq/. I think it's preferable to do the planning on the same charts you'll use for navigating.

My experience exporting data is similar, in that routes and waypoints will import into Navionics, but only the most basic elements (points and names). Choice of icons and other annotations such as text notes, go/no-go areas, clearing bearings, etc. do not carry over.

Re: Transfering waypoints

Unfortunately I’ve drunk the iDevice Kool-Aid since my work provide them free.
So no OpenCPN on tablet/phone for me.

Re: Transfering waypoints

ChrisJHC Very happy you've found a solution. It appears others have found good ways of using navobj.xml and route export to gpx. (sv_pelagia) and perhaps we should add a page to the manual describing that process.
