Trouble Installing (and Running) OpenCPN

I'm running UBUNTU Hardy heron

I installed OpenCPN, but get the following messages when it tries to run

opencpn
opencpn: /usr/lib/libwx_gtk2u_adv-2.8.so.0: version `WXU_2.8.11' not found (required by opencpn)
opencpn: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by opencpn)

When I do a locate on libc.so.6, it appears to be there
locate libc.so.6
/lib/libc.so.6
/lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6

however libwx is not found
locate libwx_gtk2u_adv-2.8.so.0

I thought all dependencies should be satisfied with a Synaptic install

Any ideas?

You are not saying which version of OpenCPN you're trying to install, but I assume 2.3.1.
It's probably not possible to install the latest deb package on Hardy Heron, an almost 3 years old Ubuntu release. To many things has changed and the binary release is compiled with Ubuntu 10.10.
You have three options, use an older version of OpenCPN, try to compile your own, probably a frustrating exercise due to old standard packages or upgrade to a later Ubuntu.
I suppose you now about the OpenCPN documentation OpenCPN User Manual | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Thanks so much for pointing out the problem. I had also tried compiling from source and also had run into problems with that!

Incidentally, I have the 2.3.1 windows version working "pretty well" in LINUX by using WINE. There is some trouble, though, in setting up the directories for the charts.

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.
