uncontrolled mouse in Win 10 when USB connections

Hi,
I've found no simple joy in Google on my seriously wayward mouse. Norton does not find anything, but can't use it when issue occurs.

Unfortunately, it is intermittent. Seems to be random. Sometimes when the 3 USB connections through a hub are plugged in, the mouse jumps all over the screen pulling up and discarding stuff from wherever. If I disconnect the USB port, all OK. I usually reboot, but this doesn't seem to have absolute effect. This symptom also happened on a different laptop and I thought it possibly was a hardware issue so I bought a new HP laptop. Which worked great for many months (pre use of O, though doubtful it is caused by O). Not now, though only occasional. Seems Win does not like several Com ports!

Am trying to get O to mate with my autopilot, but the jumping mouse has sidetracked me. It is not related to O, since when it happens there is no way to even call up O.

Sorry to bother you as likely not an O problem, but it has stopped me from making a full setup. Hoping others have experienced...and solved this issue.

Thanks,

Armand

Re: uncontrolled mouse in Win 10 when USB connections

I've had this problem, where Windoze misidentifies a USB device as a mouse, before. I don't have a magic bullet for you, but I have gotten around it by being careful about the order in which your devices are powered up and USB connections made. Try to keep the device off or silent while making the USB connection so that there is no data coming over the line during the connection process. Good luck!

If you are feeding nmea 183 data to a serial or USB port it is commonly taken as mouse inputs by windows.

In older windows you could disable serial mouse in the registry by manually editing it. I have no idea on win 10.

But this is common...

jt11791 & smac999,

Wow, I'm not crazy! Indeed, this makes some sense...thinks the plugin is a serial mouse (and my "old" MS Surface is likely fine!!). I will investigate how to disable all serial mice..that I don't have! What a goofy deal. May or may not have been on the 10th screen in a Google search.

Thanks, and if (when?) I find a way to change this I'll post it here.

Armand

All, in Win 10 you can Edit part of the Registry via this link. Easy to do, and I'm 99% sure that it will do the trick. I've not taken laptop to boat to verify. Posting since I'm so thrilled to find this answer, thanks to friends also running OpenCPN!

Armand..
I can confirm the missing 1% up 100. I've used this method for years from Win-XP to Win10. The missing percentage would be that some major Win updates may reset the start value to 3. So my advice is to save the description in some own "Tricks and tips" folder.

Armand/Hakan
Thanks for the tip. My boat computer started doing this for the first time a week or two ago, possibly after a Windows 10 update. The offending interface was an RS232/RS422 to USB converter that I had to disconnect; but no longer!

Re: uncontrolled mouse in Win 10 when USB connections

along with the above registery fix, simply unplugging the serial adaptor and re-plugging it works for me.

Re: uncontrolled mouse in Win 10 when USB connections

Here is the correct fix, without needing to edit the registry. It works for all versions of Windows.

Open device manager. (how to get there is different for different versions, but usually through control panel.)

Expand "Ports (COM and LPT)"
Right click on the port that is messing up the mouse and click properties.
Click Port settings->Advanced and turn Serial Enumerator off.

It should be ok to turn Serial Enumerator off on everything except the actual mouse.

Well, that's kind of hard to edit a not present port that's disconnected since it's messing up the mouse. And for the same reason I can't have it connected to be able to edit it's properties.

Re: uncontrolled mouse in Win 10 when USB connections

Your logic is sound! But on my system the effect is intermittent, so sometimes I can fire up the system and it's OK. That's the time to make wholybee's suggested changes ...
