Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

Hello,

I've noticed a few places in the oeSENC charts for Uk and Ireland where there is a surprising lack of detail, like there is meant to be a more detailed chart that for some reason I can't see.

In the attachment below you can see a blank blue area for Castletownberehaven in the South West of Ireland, this is Ireland's second busiest fishing port and has a lot of navigation details available for it.

Are there any OpenCpn settings I should be checking?

I'm using OpenCpn 4.6.1 on Windows 10 Pro with osENC release 3 for the UK and Ireland.

Thanks,

Aedan

You're right
Same basic chart in release 2 and 3, under W7, W8.1 and Ubuntu 16.4
My settings are ok for the surrounding charts

Aedan...

there are places where for reasons unknown to us the corresponding vector charts are not included into the exchange sets issued by UKHO. So nothing one can resolve with settings.

We would be very interested to get notice about places where this is the case as we are discussing this issues with UKHO.

Castletownberehaven is new for me. There are some missing charts in the Severn estuary we know about plus two charts from Alderney.
Severn has improved with last update but is not 100% complete yet.

Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

Hi Hubert,

Thanks for looking into this. I have found two areas so far, Castletownberehaven and all of Dumanus Bay, the second large bay just south of Castletownberehaven. I'll post here if I find any more.

Thanks,

Aedan

Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

When one looks at the UK coverage on Primar catalogue (S63 charts), it is rather patchy as far as large scale charts are concerned (approach, harbour and berthing scales)
The white patches are areas you cannot expect to have better than 1:150 000 scale charts
This contrasts with e.g. the complete coverage of the French channel shore at large scale
Now at least one cell seems missing on the large scale Castletown Bearhaven chart, which could be an oversight....

As an example, I'd rather enter Youghal river mouth using the VisitmyHarbour raster chart than the oeSenc vector one !

Any developments on the missing Castletownberehaven and Dunmanus Bay charts? I have just downloaded release 4 and they are unchanged in that.

Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

Aedan,

the issues are acknowledged by the chart producer and we are discussing them actively.
How long it will take to solutions? We are talking about a not so small organization...

Hubert

btw.: in case somebody needs a specific chart very badly, there is in many cases the corresponding S-63 chart.

Ps.:
Of course we could license the raster charts as well. But this means the development of a dedicated plug-in and an additional burden for the infrastructure.

Thanks Hubert, good to know it's being looked into. Stick with the vector charts [emoji3]

Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

I bought the Croatian oesenc charts. Everything is working fine, except that there is absolutely no text showing up on the charts. No names of harbors, bays, etc. I tried various settings also the ones shown in this thread, but had no luck. Is this information missing on the charts or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Jobe

Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

Jobe..

first be sure that Texts are enabled. The "T" key toggles text on/off same as the A+ button from the tool bar.

Next you should check under Vector Chart Display at Options which parameters are enabled.

The Croatian charts do show text.....

sorry clicking A+ showed all Text entries. Thanks a lot, sometimes things are so easy - and sorry for the stupid question.

Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

I have just bought and downloaded the UK and FR charts. Looking first at my local area on the east coast there seems to be a missing area of detail in the upper Orwell and Deben. I believe this corresponds to chart 2693 Approaches to Felixstowe Harwich and Ipswich. Is this a known problem?

Re: Up-to-date vector charts for OpenCPN - oeSENC

Have you chart outlines enabled? The "O" key.
Zooming in further?

Try to play with Vector Chart Details zooming/scale Weighting slider at Options|Display|Advanced to accommodate to your preferences.
The "D" key will bring up the slider directly on the chart.

In your area we don't have information about eventually missing details.

Thanks for your quick response. Yes, I've tried that and turned zoom weighting up to 5. See screenshot.
