USB GPS Keeps Changing Ports

I have the latest O running in ubuntu on a toshiba laptop, all good so far but the gps seems to keep jumping between \dev\ttyusb0 and \dev\ttyusb1
AIS seems fine so far, both are through serial/usb adaptors.

Any ideas why or pointers to a work around? The GPS has always been a bit grumpy, worse in win7.

And great work guys, very nice prog.

Thanks in advance all

Re: Usb GPS keeps changing ports?

Hopefully I haven't misinterpreted the question but in case no-one else replies...

Think about writing udev rules. This will allow you to ensure that when a hotpluggable device (like usb to serial converter) is plugged in, some characteristic of of that device (e.g. the model of adapter or the port you've plugged it into) is used to map it to a particular device name. It won't look at the data stream and suss out that it's a GPS input, but if you always use a particular serial-to-usb adapter or particular port for your GPS, this could sort you out. Note that the document mentioned refers to "udevinfo". On ubuntu use udevadm (syntax different: see udevadm(8))
