Use of k-charts possible?

Hello there,

the link list does not contain sources for free navigational charts for the European seas, only for inshore waters. Sea charts would be a useful addition!

I have been using free k-charts on an Onwa GPS plotter on the Dutch North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Se and was very satisfied with the content. The charts are from 2015, so not very "fresh", but all the marks which I could see on the water were on the map as well. These charts are great for a quick overview on the helm station. As the main navigational aid, I always have current paper charts with me, so I donīt mind using outdated charts for an overview.

The k-charts cover the oceans all around the world and can be downloaded here:

Would it be possible to integrate the use of this chart format in the OpenCPN software?

Greetings from good old Europe
Daniel

Hello everyone, same problem, I would be very interested too, they are very practical and free cards. It would be nice to have them on OpenCPN too!

Buon vento!

Re: Use of k-charts possible?

K-charts has been discussed already in this thread:https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ts-181651.html. Nothing has changed.
It's wrong to believe that K-charts are "free". They are not. You can only use them on an Onwa chart-plotter. Onwa has licensed them from various Hydrographic offices, if you read the introduction. They cannot be made to work on OpenCPN without paying, not to talk about a lot of work.
But why even think about reinventing the wheel?
On OpenCPN there is already a similar system, O-charts .

Ok, thanks Thomas,
I have already installed O-Chart with dongle. But there are no maps for the lakes where I sail.
Good wind!
