Using NOAA APT Images as background for grib files

Hi Everybody!!

I built an antenna and I´m able to download the Automatic Picture Transmission imagens from NOAA satellites.
How can I overlay them with the grib files on OpenCPN or any other software?

Thank you very much, I´m novice in Navigation issues, so sorry if it´s a rookie question.

Best Regards

Alex

You can overlay images as layers in gimp, adobe, etc.

Hi Barnakiel!!
ok, I could that. But I´m trying to find a more practical and almost automatic way for someone cruising an ocean, using a navigation software.
My intention is to capture the noaa images via radio and the grib files via email with iridium phone.

What software are you receiving that sats with?

I use WxtoImg. I project the images to mercator in WxtoImg with a grid displayed and save the images. I usually make a morning and evening composite, or rather WxtoIMG does it for me.

I import this to OCPN using the Fax plugin. Once you have calibrated one image from WxtoImg it is saved and provided you don't change anything you reuse it.

Load the GRIB as usual and there you have it. It is a very powerful sanity check on the GRIB files. Along with a calibrated barometer, and calibrated TWS and TWD you can gain a good insight into the validity of the GRIB model output.

Let me know if you need more info. This has come up a couple of times recently so I'll try to put together a step by step guide and put it on my webpage sometime.

Thanks; I will

I had a boat in Brazil at the time of the World Cup. In Marina Gloria in Rio and then Illabella. We didn't go for the world cup that was just coincidental. Didn't like Rio but liked Illabella and would definitely like to see more of Brazil one day.
