Version 5.2 no menu bar ?

Even though it shows as an option in the user interface settings I cannot get it to show up ?

Why are my open charts gone after shutdown and restart ?

If your referring to the upper menu bar you've to select to show it all time with a selection in user interface as you mentioned. Is that not working for you? I'm on Windows and RPi Linux Buster and it's working fine.
Another tool is the "Alt" key on the same systems. Not sure about Mac. CarCode could actually sometimes serve valuable help there.


Your charts question needs some more details to be commented.

Win 10 new system new laptop, have checked the boxes for the menu bar, and tried the Alt button, cannot get it, the tool bar is there on the side.

The chart issue has been resolved.

Just read the following in the help file, seems confusing between menu bar and tool bar. A little confusing

NOTE: In OpenCPN 5 The Toolbar grabber and the ToolBox→“User interface”→ “Toolbar and Window Style” no longer exist.

The Toolbar is floating and can be placed anywhere on the screen, vertical or horizontal. Note the “grabber” symbol at the far right side of the toolbar. Use this handle to drag the toolbar wherever you want it. The default position is horizontal and docked top left. It snaps to the edges. Right click on the grabber and a cross will appear. Left click on the cross and the toolbar shifts its orientation, to vertical or horizontal format. Right click on the cross to return to the grabber. On Windows (at least), unless in OpenGL display mode, the toolbar dims down transparently until you roll over it.

NOTE: In OpenCPN 5 the styles are no longer available.

There are three different styles of Toolbars to choose from. Go to the ToolBox→“User interface”→ “Toolbar and Window Style” and select one of the following styles:

I used version 4+ in Florida for many years with no real issues and liked the menu bar, that's the long one usually along the top of the screen, so I know what I am looking for, ver 5.2 I cannot for the life of me get it to appear even though in user interface I have checked the menu bar box. Is there anywhere else in ver 5.2 where one activates that item ? I am using the oeSenc charts, perhaps that's an issue though I doubt it as I have ran s-57 charts before with no issues .From what I see on the forum, this is perhaps a simple fix that escapes the obvious ?

Nope, nothing obviously new in OCPN 5.
Really, we need to know what your screen looks like.
This attached pix is the "menu bar". The "toolbar" is the mostly black vertical feature to the left.
Agree on all so far?

Since you're mention O ver 4.... could it be you refer to the old tool bar in version 5 replaced by the shrinkable new one?
See my shot of the two versions. The menu bar is optionally still there if you like. The tool bar is changed since version 4. "It's not a bug. It's a feature"

The black one I have, the colored ne I don't and that is the one I was hoping to have, I guess it has been replaced with 5 labels instead, means more "clicks".
So, I assume the colored one is long gone..

The "black" one, together with the per-canvas one in the bottom right corner of each chart canvas, provide exactly the same functionality the "colored" one did, and more.
So the number of clicks to complete the same tasks is either the same or less than it used to be with OpenCPN 4.
All of these things are called a toolbar, not a menu, in case you have some more questions about them.
A menu is that stripe on the top of the screen with labels that unfold when you click on them.
