Re: Version 5 Lock Waypoint

Got it ! I would have expected to found this waypoint menu in a "Chart" tab, rather than in a "Ships" tab ...

Thank you

Re: Version 5 Lock Waypoint

Just a suggestion... I might be the only one who uses "lock waypoint frequently", and if so, please feel free to ignore, but I sure would love to have this feature in an easy to find/access place.

Personally, i am happy to keep them all locked and to right click on any waypoint and select properties if I want to move them. Then just close the properties dialog once I have finished editing.

The properties box open. Thanks StuM. I had no idea I could use it that way.

The "lock" dialog under Options > Ships > Routes/Points actually says:

"Lock Waypoints (unless waypoint property dialog visible)"

Re: Version 5 Lock Waypoint

I suppose reading the directions would help. I just noticed you are in Port Moresby. We are in Vanuatu, headed that way. Maybe we'll see you there. Cheers.

Re: Version 5 Lock Waypoint

Notes on locking marks and routes

In the installed help

file:///Applications/OpenCPN.app/Contents/SharedSupport/doc/getting_started/marks_and_routes.html

The location of where to lock marks is shown as

Goto*Options → Display →Advanced* which seems to be wrong now.

On the other hand, I could not find any reference to locking marks or routes in the wiki help, though I would hope it is there somewhere.

The setting is now, which I found from this forum, is at Options/SHIPS/Routes/Points

Looking over the related discussion of this topic in the forum (locking marks and routes) I am in the camp that this is extremely important and should be very easy to find and set, such as a right click option or notable part of the mark and route properties. locking a route could just lock all of its waypoints and prevent a delete.

Accidentally moving a carefully set waypoint in a route is a prominent hazard to navigation. This can happen by accident by the navigator, or it can happen by a crew just looking over the route, zooming in, panning etc.

I have learned of several examples from our students, and know of one big one, as I was on board at the time... mercifully waked up in the night by a cockpit conversation "I didn't know you could see Smith Island Light from here." (You can't; It was Ediz Hook Light viewed from inside the Hook.) The waypoint jogging outside of Ediz Hook had been accidentally deleted by someone looking over the route that evening, and we were about to sail right over the spit. This was years ago before learning how crucial it is to lock the routes. Anyone taking the long inside passage to Alaska will have a complex very sensitive set of waypoints to work with that take many hours to lay out, and we do not want to lose these or get them tweaked.

For reference:

In Expedition, RosePoint's Coastal Explorer, and in TimeZero Professional, lock mark is a right click option. In the program WinGPS Voyager from the Netherlands, lock mark is the default on all new marks.

* * * with all that said, the present system is fine if it were easier to find. The procedure of locked unless properties shows seems to work, so these are mostly notes for Help writers and maybe future editions. Also, this could be in the instructions and i just missed it.

Re: Version 5 Lock Waypoint

@DavidBurch

The installed help is not describing version 5.
The Wiki is somewhat better as it refers to this introduction to Version 5: https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/about/ver500.html
In this document the new location for locking wpts i described, especially if you study the pictures as well.

In the wiki, that also describes v 4.8 and not version 5.0 you can find the documentation here:I agree that locking wpts is an important issue. Currently we have a kind of "soft" lock, but we should also introduce the option of a "hard" lock, where a user can look at the wpts properties without being able to move wpts. This mode would also not allow deletion or a reversal of a route.

The current option is not available in the "Menu Bar" (shortcut "ALT"), where it would fit just fine.

The option to lock wpts is not on when activating the "Recovery Template". This should be corrected as this particular template i supposed to be a safe configuration.

Wiki Changes for v5.0.0:

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...es#move_a_mark

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...outes_-_points

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...g:ships#routes

Suggestion: Move "Routes - Points" up one level to "Options > Ships > Routes - Points" next to "Charts"
