Re: Watchdog Plugin

Rick, are you sure the P79 has NMEA output? It’s completely silent on electrical specs on the airmar web pages.

Re: Watchdog Plugin

The P79 is analogue and needs a device to drive it. The P79S has built-in signal processing and NMEA0183/NMEA2000 interfaces. It's also considerably more expensive ... ...

Re: Watchdog Plugin

It is the P79S that Sean could use I guess. I thought the p79 had n2k and 0183 output.

Re: Watchdog Plugin

Which one is cheapest which provides nmea output?

Do any have more than just depth in nmea? Can any output the bottom type?

Re: Watchdog Plugin

Sean there is one that outputs depth, speed and temp, in n2k and nmea0183 which I think would be ideal for you. It requires no thru-hull, but mounts inside with an antifreeze pond. The p79 type also adjusts to shoot straight down or slightly ahead.

Perhaps hoolie can point us to to specific one and the specs

Re: Watchdog Plugin

The P79 has a two-wire interface that needs "pinging" by a driver device. Lots of MFDs and depth instruments have this capability.

The P79S is self-contained described here and has either NMEA0183 or NMEA2000 interface.

AFAIK it's about 5x the price of the basic P79 - do a search!

ps I have bought a P79 and an Actisense DST-2 to drive it and provide NMEA0183 into my system. Also interfaces to my paddle log. Much cheaper than the P79S. Haven't installed it yet - a job for the Spring!

Re: Watchdog Plugin

Hoolie you are right. The p79s nmea0183 costs $500+
However ebay p79 approx $50 plus actisense dst-2 about $200.

It seems to me that 25 donations to Sean of $20 would get him depth.

Unless someone is replacing instruments and will send the old ones to Sean, provided they output nmea 0183.

Re: Watchdog Plugin

Investigating Garmin Striker 4. 100US$ at Amazon. Has even GPS.
If somebody has a documentation about the serial port - it has one - or is using it, this would help.

So it should work.

No documentation about NMEA output, or the output on the serial port.

Re: Watchdog Plugin

I'll send money to help support this but I'm a little confused about why a depth sounder is required. Opencpn already connects to depth sounders and displays the depth through the dashboard plugin. Is there no way to piggyback off that?

Re: Watchdog Plugin

Plugins do their own handling of nmea0183

It seems he doesn't have a depth sounder at all, so nothing to piggyback off, At least not one that has any data output

Re: Watchdog Plugin

Sean's website: About
Donate button

Lets donate for a new depth sounder for Sean, so that Watchdog will get a depth alarm. It appears we will need to donate at least about $140 - $150 including the Striker4 and the data/power cable.

Thanks Hoolie and Cray! We have a good start towards this worthwhile effort now.
