Re: Weather Routing

Gillatarom. Thankyou. I am going to need those files perhaps, due to the following:

1. Renamed my opencpn.ini file (should have some of the wxrte setup, but not config)
2. Restarted Opencpn, it created a new opencpn.ini.
3. In Options > Plugins Enabled WxRte.
4. In main window clicked on WxRte Toolbar Button.
5. Prompt came up for a new installation with two checkboxes. (expected)
6. I unchecked one box such that just new files would be installed. When the program came up my old weatherroutingconfiguration.xml file had been rewritten. I did not think that was the intent.
7. Also for some reason the example configrations would not route for me. They were still using the old polar files.
8. So I closed Opencpn.
9. Deleted the opencpn.ini file again. Loaded Openpn, Enabled WxRte, Climatology and Grib.
10. Went to WxRte toolbar button. Got menu two checks about initiallizing. Left the two checkmarks in place and installed the initialization files and the whole shooting match.
11. WxRte came up with the same sample files and this time they "Computed" OK.
I am going to have to do this again after restoring my old wxrteconfig.xml

The routings seem to work well. Note the rough trip down to the Carnaries!

Also note that when starting up WxRte initially without any settings, the new Expansion/Contraction button needs help by pulling out the menu to set and establish the size in the ini file. New users will be stumped by this.

Re: Weather Routing

Recent improvements in comfort level.

Pull request #167 - Change comfort model and scoring for comfort on route option
Change comfort model and scoring
Of course, this is very empirical, and based on my proper sailing experience but changes include: * Course over wind score is changed to a normal distribution center on 30°, as maximum incomfort is felt when sailing on the wind (30-40°) * Wind and waves scores are changed to an exponential function

Re: Weather Routing

Following Hurricane Irma does cause the comfort indicator to work.
Using the Irma grib file from this page

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...uting:examples

It seems to me that Panning and Zooming has suffered somehow. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Weather Routing

In addition to slow panning and zooming, I thought there was a yellow information popup when you rolled along the route. Someone wanted date and time added. This no longer seems to work. Also the yellow message should still work even if the route to cursor is turned off.

Can anyone please confirm these problems?

I'd like to advise that the pan/zoom/move problem must have been due to computer low memory.

Also there never has been a Tooltip, yellow information popup along the route. Skipperearly, want to enter this into Tracker? Besides est time/date there would be some other useful info to add.

How to Edit a Polar

This is a preliminary instruction about Editing Polars for format and content, intended for the manual.

Hi Rick,

Attached are my latest polars for the Lagoon 500. There are 6 polars:
Full Sail - 2 to 20 kts true wind speed (TWS), 50 to 180 degrees true wind angle TWA
1st Reef - 20 to 26 knots TWS, 55 to 180 degrees TWA
2nd Reef - 26 to 32 knots TWS, 60 to 180 degrees TWA
3rd Reef - 32 to 40 knots TWS, 70 to 180 degrees TWA
Genaker - 2 to 20 knots TWS, 130 to 180 degrees TWA
Motoring - 0 to 20 knots TWS, 0 to 180 degrees TWA

I use all 6 polars in my WR Boat configuration file and place the polars in the above order to prioritise the sail selection. I let the WR PI decide which sail combination to use for all conditions.

I have been testing the above with OpenCPN 4.8.2 and WR PI 1.11.0 for over 2 months now, and I am very pleased with the results as they really do approximate what happens in actual practice. The Lagoon 500 can carry more sail than that shown in the polars, but it is at the expense of a lot more weather helm. I like to sail as close to neutral rudder as possible.

You can include these polars in the WR Pi if you like.

NOTE: Delete the ".xls" extension before using the polars.

Wow, first reef is 20 knots! I reef at 12-15 knots. Second reef is 20 knots!

One suggestion.. Try defining boat speeds for 1st reef down to 16 knots, and second reef down to 20 knots.

Now set the overlap percentage for the boat in the cross over chart tab.

This should make it possible to make less sail changes, as you may not immediately unreef for a temporary wind drop.

This is mostly useful with short time steps, and wind that increases and decreases often. To some degree it is averaged within a time step on longer passages, so it's not clear how useful this feature is or not.

This was my intention, it's good to know someone can do this.

Would be great to add more polars, especially a complete set like this!

Re: Weather Routing

Thanks Kevinh, nice job. If you can extend the polars you'll make use of crossover as Sean explains. Would you like us to wait before including?

Yeh - hold off for a while Rick. I will do some testing with the overlaps.

Question - do I set overlaps for each of the 6 polars? Looks like I need to.

What do you and Sean use as an overlap % - I will try 20%.

I think Sean told you, does this help?

Re: Weather Routing

Boat_Alexandra,
Thanks for your great work.
Unfortunately, I upgrade the OpenCPN to 4.8.2 on W10, 64bit PC and there is problem with the Weather routing pluging both for my boat polars and examples (if I use one in the Configuration menu).
My steps are:
1. Create my Boat.pol by the Polar plugin of OpenCPN.
2. Open the Weather-routing plugin and new Configure and Edit windows.
3. Add my file Boat.pol.
4. Try to Save as Boat (.xlm) to: OpenCPN>plugings>weather_routing_pi>data>boat
Response window:
Failed to open for writing.
C:\Program data\opencpn\plugings\weather_routing\contours\.co ntours.

Please, adviced me where I am wrong or how to solve my problem. Note, I am not a software expert.

Thank you.

Re: Weather Routing

Petr-Singh,
You have identified and confirmed a very recent bug! Thank you.
For some reason the program appears to be making the weather_routing user files READ ONLY! Even manually changing this does not work because the read only gets reset by Opencpn/WxRte somehow. See

Bug: Editing a Polar file in Dim Tab, insert TWS=11 causes Opencpn Crash-READ ONLY

Please standby, hopefully this will get fixed!
