Re: Weather Routing

Didier has provided a treasure trove of Grib tools below. I think it would be worthwhile adding these to the Grib_pi documentation, under an "Advanced" title.

Re: Weather Routing

Didier ...

Interested to see your tidal current gribs in /IFREMER.

I have been updating my reader for Copernicus netCDF tidal current data.

What is the source for your 15 minute interval tidal current gribs?

Is there now a C++ library for conversion to grib from netCDF or do I still need to use CDO?

Many thanks,
Mike

You can get nc files after registering there:

I don't know if a library can do the job, I'm using cdo.

Test Weather_routing Plugin Manager

For those who are building the current development version of OpenCPN on MacOS, Linux, etc. would you mind trying the new "weather_routing_pi" Plugin Manager to see how/if it works?

You must find this new version under the "Alpha" catalog, select "Alpha" and then "Update to the Alpha Catalog" then you can install the new version of the plugin. When you go back to the "Master" catalog the plugin will show a green puzzle icon, but should still be usable.

I can only test for Windows.

You can post results here, or perhaps better under weather_routing_pi github Issues.

Thanks.

Re: Weather Routing

Weather_routing PI Manager works on the Beta Catalog in OpenCPN v5.0.522 (development):

1. Windows - yes works.
2. MingW 10 -
3. Ubuntu 18.04 -yes works.
4. Ubuntu 16.04 -
5. Debian 10 -
6. Raspian 9.4 -
7. Raspian 10 -
8. Fedora 29 -
9. Flatpak 18.08 -
10. Darwin 10.13.6 (MacOS) -

We need experienced beta testers to test the plugin in these environments and confirm operation. To do this configure & build the current development version of Opencpn v5.0.522 and use the Plugin Manager.

Re: Weather Routing

What? Nobody tried these, using any of the environments?

I am not going to run around jumping to every problem if this is released and nobody tried it. Sorry. That is not in the cards.

Re: Weather Routing

I would be happy to do beta testing on Windows 10, but I don't have a build environment, so unless you can provide installer exe's, I'm useless.

Re: Weather Routing

I have a minor bug/feature request for the Weather Routing plugin that seems like it should be pretty simple to implement. I have both 4.8.6 and 5.0 (latest "production" version) and WxRoute 1.12 and 1.13 respectively, and both have the same issue.

The Weather Route Report (View / Report) pop-up window has 2 windows. The top window has a set of text information about the route. Date/time, distance, average speed, number of tacks, etc (I would copy it here, but I can't copy it!).

I wanted to share that info with a friend, but when I select the text in that window, there is no "copy" function (neither right-click or ctrl-c does anything) so I could paste it into an email or message. There is no export option that would let me export it to a text file. (There IS an export menu item somewhere in WxRoute, but that function just "exports" the weather route as a track in OpenCPN).

Re: Weather Routing

I find the weather routing pi behaving somewhat peculiar. I have 2 configurations. Both have the same start point but 2 different destination points. On one of the routs generated the last line in the report gives me how much speed increase I got from favorable current. In the other there is no such line with that info. Am I doing something wrong. Note I have the same grib data and the same polar info.

Re: Weather Routing

hasse_A,

That's interesting, but I can't help figure it out right now. Trying to get wx-routing upgraded and there are other issues. Maybe you can dig into it a little more and advise?

Re: Weather Routing

I am trying out this pi and have a question.

I have downloaded 2 grib-files with GFS and RTOFS, wind and current data over the same area.

Now, how do you get the weather_rouiting_pi to take in account both these files when computing the route ?

/Hans
