Re: Weather Routing

What version of weather_routing and what version of climatology?
Try turning off climatology. Turn off all Options Detect land, Currents,

You obviously can repeat this. What settings do you have on?

Try turning some off, currents, detect boundary, optimize tacking.

Under Advanced Tab, pick reset all to defaults.

Re: Weather Routing

Rick,

Looks like deactivating Climatology cures the problem.
Climatology version is 1.4

It looks like just activating Climatology makes the WeatherRouting freeze.
I have a win7 machine where this is not the case.

Re: Weather Routing

Hans, good sleuthing. I will try with Climatology 1.4 if I have it available.

Screenshot attached. The monitor this was on is at 1600 x 900 so I had to shrink the windo a bit to get within the upload limit. I think you can still see what i mean?

FWIW the text in the status bar on OCPN grows and shrinks with the window and at full screen is the same large size, but I expect that is someone else's problem?

Re: Weather Routing

Rick,

Sorry to say. The conclusion that it had anything with Climatology was to hasty.
I will do a recording of the events happening.
Please await me to find the time to get this done.
I will get back in 1 or 2 days.

Re: Weather Routing

Rick,

In this video https://www.dropbox.com/s/td7b5ca5zas8si3/WR.mp4?dl=0

I have left the OpenCPN for quite some time expecting it to go more or less idle as it is not doing anything.
The screen is not updated and the cpu is at 20-22% load.
At 13 s into the video I grab the WeatherRoute window and the screen is repainted and the cpu load reaches zero.

Re: Weather Routing

Hans, using Opencpn 5.1.612 + 4f9c9 and Weather_routing 1.13.8 and Climatology 1.4.2 and downloading a large grib of the atlantic, and running a route from Bermuda to England, the CPU did not go down below 20% and it only went down to 19% afterwards for a period of about 8 minutes. Then I stopped. The fans were running. Everything seems to be normal, however the computer is running hard.

Rick, I have now also deactivated Climatology.
Why is your CPU afterwards running at 19% when it is supposed to not be doing anything ? Mine is at 0%. It appears the behavior is not consistent and can varie.

Right now, if I let the route finish the CPU load went to 0% as I suppose it should.
If I then minimize the OpenCPN and open/maximize it again the chart and the grib form are blank and the CPU load goes to 10%. The WeatherRouting form is filled in. As soon as I grab the WeatherRouting form and move it, the chart and the grib form are repainted but CPU still is running with a load of 10%. It is then not possible to zoom or move the chart.

Re: Weather Routing

Rick, Note: I am running OpenCPN 5.0.5.18 as the standard release does not work with the Intel graphic chip in my computer. This is mentioned in another thread.

Re: Weather Routing

While updating frontend2 to Jon's 1.0.120 version of testplugin I had to make sure weather routing worked, and built a local tarball of version 1.13.9 and installed it and ran a big route across the Atlantic. Task Manager showed 20 to 22 percent cpu use and 49 to 52 percent memory use, even 4 to 8 minutes after completion of the route. Also I found it difficult to move menus and the routing due to the computing load on the computer. The fans were running overtime. Here are a few shots.

I believe that something is causing this overuse of the computer and wonder if it has something to do with frontend logic or the interaction of the new frontend2 with the program, in particular the order and way we have set up to build in CMakeLists.txt?

It would be very helpful if someone who is good at tracking these things down in software, perhaps didg (didier) could help us out.

The repository for this new version is https://github.com/rgleason/weather_...tree/frontend2

This report is supportive of what Hans [hasseA] has reported below.

Since the software does work, and we need this update for armh installs, I am going to push an update to the plugins master catalog anyway. Hopefully others will report their experience and perhaps identify the problem.

Re: Weather Routing

Dave has just merged Weather Routing pi v1.13.9.0 into opencpn/plugins master catalog. Please test and advise if cpu and memory usage remains high after completion of a big routing. Thanks.

I installed this and have found it worked for a while and the seemed to screw up Climatology. Weird. Tried reinstalling, but it won't even download. Climatology now hangs and I've had to remove it. Need to spend some time troubleshooting this to make sure it's not some other issue.

Re: Weather Routing

Scarns, thanks for trying it. Perhaps your plugins cache needs to be cleaned up?
and the plugins reinstalled. This is where tarballs are stored. You could try a search for cache? and pick the none associated with plugins. Don't know your OS. I was using climatology during my test without any apparent problem. I should try it without Climatology I guess.

Hans,
The repository is my github repos branch: frontend2

https://github.com/rgleason/weather_...tree/frontend2
but you should be able to install it using the new Plugin Manager if you are using the current beta version of O, if not, you can download the appropriate deb or exe file from

https://cloudsmith.io/~opencpn/repos...encpn*1.13.9.0
using the search opencpn*1.13.9.0
this is in the Cloudsmith opencpn/weather-routing-alpha repository because it is coming from a branch different than "master"

Re: Weather Routing

Rick,

I downloaded weather_routing_pi-1.13.9.0-msvc-x86_64-10.0.14393-MSVC.exe
installed it, activated it and ran it. It completed.

Looks like the cpu load goes to idle as expected.
Only thing is: nothing is displayed .
Route report seems to report valid data but there is no route displayed.

As I am helping a number of boats across the Atlantic West to East i need to revert back to the older version of WeatherRouting_pi.

/Hans
