Re: Weather Routing

Dave,

Here are some results of my trials.
OpenCPN 5.6.2 and weather_routing 1.13.43

1) gribs and OpenGL : Hangings
2) no grib but with OpenGL : Hangings
3) no gribs no OpenGL : Terribly slow and hangings. Movement of the weather routing window if minimized and then opened is required. Otherwise no chart will be displayed.

Note, in OpenCPN 4.8.4 everything works fine. No hangings with gribs and with OpenGL.

Re: Weather Routing

Hans...

The basic method of debugging is always to simplify, simplify, simplify.

Please try one of the sample routes as available in a fresh installation, NO GRIBS, no land avoidance, only Climatology. Try Provincetown->Lizard Point.
In GL and non-GL mode, please.

These sample routes are known to work in even the most primitive hardware.
It may be slower in non-GL mode, but should not hang. If it hangs, please tell me what your most recent actions were.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Weather Routing

Hans...
From a previous post:
"Link to log-file with OpenGL and gribs (with failure as on picture)"

I see the picture, and it looks normal to me, for that version of weather_routing. Isochrones are known to be missing in this version, but the route seems to complete correctly. And the logfile looks entirely normal, no hangs.

So we need to be very much more specific in description of failures to make progress here.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Weather Routing

Dave, tonight I tried a bunch of the standard routes both with just climatology only and with both grib_pi and a file and climatology and they all worked provided you had a good grib time (when using gribs). Occasionally they would not work but that was because there was no grib available when grib was checked. In all these runs, I did not crash OpenCPN.

These reports must be frustrating for the users, but I am having a difficult time identifying what the problem is.

I think all other plugins should be removed and then get weather_routing working and confirm that. Then add the other plugins back in one at a time.

The rectangle in the lower left corner can't be normal, can it ?
That is a hanging. Never appears in 4.8.4

Re: Weather Routing

Hans and others have you updated catalog and installed climatology and grib pi? When running with grib pi only uncheck gribs in configuration menu.
Make sure climatology is enabled.

Disable all other plugins or uninstall them.

Re: Weather Routing

Dave,
Trying Provincetown to Lizards Point with OpenGL and without gribs.
Hangs with CPU executing OpenCPN at 30%.
Chart grayed out. Program not answering (svarar inte).
Need to kill it.

Simplify, simplify.
You may be saturating your PC somehow.

Turn off all text and depth soundings. Zoom out to get less detail on chart, so you can see the entire Atlantic.

Re: Weather Routing

Disabled all plugins except weather_routing and climatology.

The error is very insidious. I had to run it several times before I got it to hang in the middle of the routeing process.
You can see the rectangle in the lower left corner as an indication that the process is hung nut it does also not continue the route.

This run was with OpenGL enabled. Next I am going to try this route without OpenGL.

When I move the WR-window the router continues.

Dave
I have mail and Opera running to communicate. Nothing else.

OpenCPN is now taking 30% of the cpu when the program is hung and the window is maximized. If I minimize it the cpu load is 5%.

Re: Weather Routing

Dave,

Changed settings to no OpenGL.
First run seemed to do ok. Stopped the router and restarted OpenCPN.
When invoking the weather_router it hung. No configurations in the WR-window can be seen, And the rectangle in the left lower corner appears.

When moving the weather_routing window the configurations appear.
Note that I had to move it several times to make the program continue.
See this film.

I had no other user program running, no mail no browser.

Re: Weather Routing

Hans,

When did you last cleanup your computer and optimize it?

I think you need a new computer.
Have you been checking Task Manager (right click in the task bar?)
Has it seen water?
What do diagnostic tests show?

I have experienced the same problem on one other laptop which I have onboard so it's not related to just the one I am using now.
However I have a third laptop onboard which is no more than 3 mounts old on which I can try the software and we will see what the result will be.

I also have a FitPC4 which is my navigation computer while under way.
I would be surprised and disappointed if you need a high end computer with high power consumption to run weather_routing. That is not what you want when at sea.

Re: Weather Routing

I am sorry we aren't there. How do the memory and cpu tests complete?

I cannot figure out what the rectangle in the lower right corner is from. Where are your menus for grib_pi and climatology? Maybe you need to remove climatology and reinstall? Perhaps one of those data files did not download properly? Is grib_pi behaving as expected? Just run each one of those plugins and see if it is working properly first.

https://opencpn-manuals.github.io/ma..._setup_grib_pi
https://opencpn-manuals.github.io/ma...climatology_pi

Are all other plugins disabled?
Only weatherrouting and grib_pi and climatology_pi as needed?

I usually run weather routings with just my GSHHS High Resolution Background "chart group" selected.
