Weather Routing

Dave, Rick,

I am a big fan of the weather routing pi and use it a lot. I help friends and even folk I don't know to make the best possible crossings with the help of it. Mind you I don't charge anyone for doing it.
At the moment I am helping 3 boats at various destinations.

So, I would love to have weather routing fully working with OpenCPN 5.6.2.
I am not sure this "bug" is the only one I have seen. Maybe the "bug" can have different behavior. Maybe this one should be taken care of first and we will see what happens.

What will the next action in the matter be ?

We are investigating. It seems a simple GUI problem with the control dialog. Unknown root cause.


Meanwhile, you have a workaround, yes?

Yes, I have been and is using 4.8.4.
However, it does not work with boundaries.

I mean the simple workaround on 5.6.2:
When it appears to hang, just move the control dialog a bit to the right. Or leave it on-screen totally. The control dialog can be re-sized to make it a bit smaller...

That is far to old a version to work with PIM. You should update to 5.6.2 now, or at least 5.6.0 but that is not ideal.

I have been experiencing hangings in all different ways. Maybe this "bug" now identified and reproducible is the only cause of my problems. Maybe not.

Often OpenCPN hangs while routing. It simply stops and you need to move the window to make it continue. Other times when you move the window the chart/screen turns shaded gray and the program says it does not answer.
Then your only option is to kill the process and start all over again. After 3-4 times with the program ending up here it gets frustrating.

It seems to be data dependent in some sense as the behavior often repeats when you try to reroute the same route.
If you load new gribs or change route it may route the whole route without hangings.

Very often there is a hard freeze where you need to kill it when you try to open a route report. If you manage to open the report and keep it open and then route another route it seems to work and the new report is presented in the routing report window upon completion of the route.

The behavior is very very insidious as when you think you have a way of reproducing the error it changes shape so to say.

What I have described must be taken with a grain of salt. I have written down from memory and there might be a slip of that.

So. I much rather stick to 4.8.4 which I know runs without a hazle until there is fix for 5.6.2 as I am doing maybe 15 or more routs a day.

When there is new release I will be happy to try it out.

If you have the time, anything that you can do to isolate reproducible conditions would be very useful to our debugging efforts. Otherwise we are groping in the dark.

Huston we have a problem.

1.6.1 does not seem to be available only 1.6.0 and I get a complaint about it it's not compatible with OpenCPN 4.8.4, please use an updated version.
(of OpenCPN I presume)

1.5.22 does not show up in plugins. Probably it is not recognized which is exactly the same problem I had with it before.

Now download whatever tarball you want and install it, using the tools available.


Options > PI > Import plugin

I am getting hangups when weather_routing with boundary enabled. 5.6.2 and current WR and Ocpn_Draw.

I think you are referring to OpenCPN 5.6.2
I don't want to use it for reasons I have explained.
When it comes to installing ocpn_draw_pi I have no problem doing this in 5.x.x

However doing it in 4.8.4 is a problem. It does not show up in the plugin menu.
Also, there is nothing like "Options > PI > Import plugin" in there.
