Weather sensor with display crashing in OpenCPN

Hi everyone. I bought the wind sensor with display from the pypilot store and a Davis anemometer. It works fine just on the display, but when I add it to OpenCPN it seems to crash and reboot.
Here's a video showing what I mean: https://youtu.be/sGNY9OGX1i8
As you can see it runs perfectly fine on a PC until I try configure it to open CPN where it seems to be in a reboot loop. Here's the debug data I pulled from OpenCPN:

Then I tried reading that serial port in putty and it ran perfectly, no reboots or any other issues. Here's some data from putty:

I also tested it on NavMonPc and it ran perfectly there too.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? I have tried two USB cables, same behaviour on both.

Re: Weather sensor with display crashing in OpenCPN

Maybe a different question. Is there a log file somewhere which says what's going on in the background of OpenCPN?

I suggest you read the manual!
https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...n:manual_basic

Have you ever selected ?

Re: Weather sensor with display crashing in OpenCPN

Just coming back to say that I've got the device working on OpenCPN now. I dual booted my laptop with Ubuntu, and the Ubuntu version of OpenCPN runs everything perfectly.

Still not sure what the problem is with the windows version, but I've given up trying to debug it. I might try a newer vesion of OpenCPN at some point in the future.

On Windows where OCPN sees the non NMEA0183 messages:
Any change you have the Options->Connections COM3 connection option: [ ] "Control Checksum" disabled? If so enable it and try again.

Re: Weather sensor with display crashing in OpenCPN

I'm not sure if I should offer suggestions if you are switching to Ubuntu. First this really seems like a bug with the wind instrument, not OCPN. Being triggered by OCPN/Windows, but I think the bug is in the instrument.

I have not used this device before. It looks like it is powering off/completely resetting? Is it powered from the USB cable? I suspect that either it is drawing too much power from the USB port and the computer is turning it off, or the driver is otherwise not liking it and turning it off.

Open Windows device manager and look under "Ports (COM & LPT)" and find the device. You might need to unplug it and plug it back in to identify what device name it is called in Windows. It may be prolific, FTDI, CP210x, or something else. (It will not be the name of the wind sensor) Once you find it, look for drivers on the Internet and update them.

If you are not up to date on your Windows updates, take care of that. And also bios updates. If you have different types of USB ports (USB 2, USB 3, and USB C) then changing to a different port type might help.

The developer of that instrument ( Sean D'Epagnier ) is on this forum. Maybe he will see this and can offer advice.
