This is my goto resource

http://www.yachtcom.co.uk/comms/weather/index.html

There’s a app for the iPhone so that by simply placing through phone near the speaker it will receive and decode weatherfax

Re: WeatherFax ...

That's fine, but we are trying to solve some issues with weatherfax_pi right now which is the topic of this thread. I think your link would be better in this thread actually, Weatherfax_pi Recievers: RtlSDR + SSB radios

Re: WeatherFax ...

Weatherfax needs a volunteer programmer to help with several critical bugs.

Bug: Retrieve > Update data fails https://github.com/rgleason/weatherfax_pi/issues/74

Bug: Download URL's fail in particular Australia BOM #75 https://github.com/rgleason/weatherfax_pi/issues/75

Bug: Export to kap corrupted. https://github.com/rgleason/weatherfax_pi/issues/53

Re: WeatherFax ...

There are some saved notes in my repository data directory with relevant links to Aus BOM MET-strdate-work-needed.md

EG: One of these links is to the latest Surface Pressure chart
Synoptic Latest B&W Black and White Mean Sea Level Pressure Chart
Synoptic Latest Color Latest Colour Mean Sea-Level Pressure Analysis

These are using *.shtml files which are compatible with browsers. There is an image file embedded in each one
http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDY00030.202205030600.png
http://www.bom.gov.au/difacs/IDX0894.gif
These images can be opened in a new browser tab, however they don't work with weatherfax! Why?

Re: WeatherFax ...

Regarding "Retrieve > Update Data"
I tried changing the url to

Quote:

to: "https://github.com/rgleason/weatherfax_pi/blob/master/data/") );
from: //"https://raw.githubusercontent.com/rgleason/weatherfax_pi/master/data/") );
I still get the same error so I think something has changed and is not coded properly anymore.

Re: WeatherFax ...

I have determined that the Retrieve > Update Data files feature was not updated to use the 12 separate WeatherfaxInternetRetrieval_ xml files.
See https://github.com/rgleason/weatherfax_pi/issues/74

Re: WeatherFax ...

I pushed a test TP frontend update 1.9.30.3 TP 1.0.200 that does not fix the 3 main bugs in weatherfax. The android OS builds both failed, the other OS succeeded.

The files are available here in Cloudsmith Opencpn Weatherfax-beta https://cloudsmith.io/~opencpn/repos...beta/packages/
and can be downloaded for preliminary testing in various OS.

These metadata files will be uploaded and available in the updated Options> Plugin beta catalog soon.

This version updates French Polynesia weatherfaxes thankyou to GordotheGrey for sending the files. More users around the world should do this.

The bugs that will require a programmer to fix are:
Bug: Export to Kap
Bug: Download URL's fail in Australia BOM #75
Bug: Retrieve > Update data fails

Re: WeatherFax ...

@GordofTheGrey

I found something useful for Australia BOM, I think.
https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/otherfax.txt

Scroll down to Australia BOM
Quote:
Australian Weather Charts The following charts are not available via FTPMAIL but the information is presented here as a service to mariners. (see robots.txt file for options to download http files via e-mail) Derived from Schedule Updated 14 November 2007 VMC & VMW Radio Fax Schedule These charts are available in the following form: http://www.bom.gov.au/difacs/IDX0854.gif etc.
There is a list of AUS weatherfaxes available with file names.
At the very least, someone could put that together in the WeatherfaxInternetRetrieval_Australia file.

I may change the URL accordingly and try just one of those images to see if it works, as "proof of concept".

There is a lot of work to do on the URL links for weatherfax to update the entire world!
Rick, as you know I was working the other day on the broken UK_MET URLS being part of the European URLs. Slowly understanding the issue and how WeatherFax is working. I'd rather like to extend the European URLs including the current weather models (ECWMF and ICON) instead of sticking to the old national models like UK_MET. I found the locations of the corresponding XMLs on my computer, so I can play around and test locally, before uploading them again to GitHub.

I will work on it, however it may take a while (maybe a couple of weeks) to come up with a suggestion for the European weather sources.

That would be great, much appreciated! European Users will be very thankful. Is there any chance you could become the European Region "maintainer"? I would be most appreciative!

It seems you are a self-starter, but if you have any questions I will try to answer.

------------

Also we are looking for a User willing to update and maintain the Australian BOM Region!
The necessary files have been located and they are quite readily accessible, scroll down to find the list.
https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/otherfax.txt
We need someone from that region to update the WeatherfaxInternetRetrieval_Australia.xml and related coordinatesets.xml and to continue maintaining it.

Re: WeatherFax ...

@Aldebaran17 Manfred
I happened to find some UK Forecast that work and are current, but they are on Noaa's website.

UK Graphic Forecasts (see bottom)

These files may be found in directory:
ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/
-----------------------------

TESTS

How about making UK Met using these? Maybe relabeling it too?

Trying http://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/we get a big list of files. And I find that adding the file names
https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/PJGA93.TIF
https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/PJGE93.TIF
https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/PJLG98.TIF and trying 24hr surface, this also downloads

https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/fax/PPVE89.TIF
---

Sea Swell/Wind Direction Analysis (North Atlantic) PJGA93.TIF
24HR Sea Swell/Wind Direction Forecast (North Atlantic) PJGE93.TIF
36HR Sea Swell/Wind Direction Forecast (North Atlantic &Carib) PJLG98.TIF
48HR Sea Swell/Wind Direction Forecast (North Atlantic) PJGI93.TIF
Surface Analysis (North Atlantic) PPVA89.TIF
24HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVE89.TIF
36HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVG89.TIF
48HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVI89.TIF
60HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVJ89.TIF
72HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVK89.TIF
96HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVM89.TIF
120HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVO89.TIF
132HR Surface Forecast (North Atlantic) PPVP89.TIF
Mean Sea Isotherm Chart 5 Day Analysis, NE Atlantic & North Sea PTUK21.TIF

These could take the place of the UK Met, perhaps relabeled somehow?

Re: WeatherFax ...

@Aldebaran17 Manfred
Keep in mind that Black and White is good for Cruisers who are voyaging, due to the smaller file sizes. You can have both if you like, maybe labeling the non color "BW" without the & because that is a problem.

One of this issues is going to be figuring out the coodinates when using the Image Wizard, because these charts aren't labeled with Lat/Long very well. Hopefully most of them are using the same coords!

I think this is a more current Noaa UK.txt file

I think that, for some reason, the methods used to download are being blocked as "unauthorized" by the servers, even though the message says there is not a working internet connection. - Is there a way to fix this problem?
Hi Rick,
unfortunately this well outside of my capability.

I have found that the files are available via FTP from
ftp://ftp.bom.gov.au/anon/gen/

Does that help?

regards
Gordo
