Re: WeatherFax ...

Will be following this with interest. I wasn't aware OpenCPN could use a pactor modem to get weather info. I know it can use the internal sound card, and I think a external one. As soon as the local Transmissions are back up, I will try this with a pactor modem.

Re: WeatherFax ...

Is there anyone who is successful with receiving WeatherFax via the plug in on SSB HF Radio? I can do so with Airmail and the signals are good but I cannot get the plug in to receive a fax. The plug in is hearing the audio input but not interpreting the audio into a weather fax image. There are several settings in the plug in not addressed in the manual. I am sure it must be in these settings but I have no idea what they should be and the settings do not correspond to anything in the Airmail program that is working currently.
If there is someone who is successful with receiving HF audio and the plug in please let me know how you have it setup.

I could keep using Airmail but want to take advantage of geo referencing the weather fax with the charting program.

Thank you,
Harley

I have quite a large stainless steel shade framework and davit structure on our vessel, I am wondering if connecting a wire to a mounting bolt and to the antenna jack would work?

Harley, thanktou for your report. This feature has worked in the past, but perhaps is not working now. What OS and version?

Re: WeatherFax ...

Hi,

I have tried today to capture radio weather faxes from Hamburg/Pinneburg using WeatherFax 1.9.58.0 on OpenCPN 5.8.4. It crashes immediate after choosing Retrieve -> Capture option from menu.

Rest options works (HF Radio Schedule, Internet, Update Data Sources) only Capture crashes.

I have attached zip file of the crash 0230888b-e9ba-468e-ac20-b75e7fb95316.zip, you should remove ".pdf" extension to unzip it.

Best regards,
Kubek

Re: WeatherFax ...

David Burch just did a video and blog post about incorporating ASCAT data into OpenCPN through WeatherFax. Is this something that can be added to the plugin?

Re: WeatherFax ...

Weatherfax needs some TLC, thanks for the ASCAT info Cray and David. We also need to get the decoder working. When this gets done is dependent on programmer availability. Fortunately the source station files were undated reasonably recently.

Re: WeatherFax ...

I've detailed in another post how I use a WebSDR to test the WeatherFax plugin.
A WebSDR is a real HF radio receiver accessible via the Internet.

I give also a few workarounds to some little problems in the UI.

It may be of interest for those willing to work on the HF Radio part of the plugin but don't have a suitable HF radio hardware, or experience bad receiving conditions.

Re: WeatherFax ...

Thank you PMX. I have not forgotten the manual update you've provided and will get to that after we complete a general streamlining of all the TP plugins.

Re: WeatherFax ...

Hi,

the information I wrote initially are aimed at developers, but of course some parts may be useful for end users.

Now, I think there are still more rough edges in the HF Radio retrieving than in the Internet based section.

There are 110 pages in this 10 years long thread, I admit I haven't read it all , just checked the last couple of years messages.

Is there a TODO and "Nice To Have" list (improvements, bugfixes) for this plugin ?
I could compare with some (random) points I've noted.

Re: WeatherFax ...

PMX The open issues are here
https://github.com/rgleason/weatherf...pen+is%3Aissue

and here on Sean's repository
https://github.com/seandepagnier/weatherfax_pi/issues

These should be reviewed and updated, and if you have other Issues, please add them.

github.com allows opensource users to create a public opensource account.

Your review would be timely as the plugin is being worked on now.
