When to switch to Ver: 5.0?

I just finished instaling my Nav upgrade hardware and now beginning to understand how to use OpenCPN for the first tine versus the older commercial Admiralty ECS programs I used before.

I have both Furuno MFD in cockpit + NUC and monitor in Pilothouse with the goal to choose and display any charting system on either monitor and other devices.

OpenCPN is fantastic but appears to demand a higher programing skill to resolve and fix changes...
My computer language skills are very basic!

So now starting to upload all of Terry's updates for Asia on to 4.8 and just wondering IF I should study this Version or download 5.0 and start with that learning curve.

I am a slow learner when it comes to computers[emoji17]
Advice please!

There is only one way forward and it is OpenCPN 5...
No programming skill is needed to use any version of OpenCPN. What you do need is patience, we will resolve any problem you may have. But we will do it in the (usually very near) future, not in the past.

Re: When to switch to Ver: 5.0?

Thanks, I have been following the notes but one posting by Valhalla (Terry) that said he would wait till the 5.0 OS side settled down before getting into Android , got me wondering.

Plan to leave Subic by June towards Indonesia, so just wondered if 5.0 was premature for a beginner?

Re: When to switch to Ver: 5.0?

OpenCPN and OpenCPN for Android are different products. It will take time for OpenCPN for Android to be rebased on OpenCPN 5.0, and that work did not even start yet.

OpenCPN 5.0 is the only version I would suggest to a beginner, there is no point in investing your time to learning a thing of the past.

And please keep on mind that the waste majority of the "power users" and all the developers already did upgrade, so getting support for an older version will only get more difficult from now on.
