bog-standard Ubuntu 18.04, as stated.
If you want help there is no point in getting snippy.

I can't tell for sure but one theory is you may have installed a version of wxWidgets that uses GTK3. OpenCPN V5.0 was not compiled for GTK3. Rather it was compiled for GTK2. The next release will have both GTK2 and GTK3 versions available.

Post the output of these commands:

dpkg -l "*libwx* | grep ii

dpkg -l "*gtk*" | grep ii

interesting. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS has wxWidgets support for GTK3 and python-wxgtk3.0 (and even python-wxgtk4.0), but not GTK2.

I tracked down and installed some packages for libwxbase2.8-0 and libwxgtk2.8-0, but it did not change the behaviour.

here's the outputs you requested:

Re: where did the grib viewer go??

First, in situations like this random “rip and install” techniques can greatly cloud the issue. It is almost a universal truth that deleting and installing programs will not produce a solution. If anything it usually makes things worse. Installing wx2.8 will not solve anything I think.

Now that we know your system does not have gtk2 I would guess this is most likely the issue. It may be a solution to install the beta copy of next release of OpenCPN. There is a gtk3 version coming. If you want to try that let me know.

condescension is about as helpful as snippyness.

do you have access to a PPA with beta .deb packages for Ubuntu? I'd be very happy to give it a try, but honestly, after a 22 year career as a Linux systems engineer, I just don't get any joy from building software from scratch anymore, and I have zero interest in turning my single "production" server into a development environment.

honestly, I'll probably just wait for the next release. I'll file an issue on github that some of the current release plugins don't work on the current stable release of Ubuntu.

Re: where did the grib viewer go??

The development team is well aware of the Linux version issues. Yes, there is a beta PPA. It was announced some time ago here in the forum.

But for some reason not listed on the download page under beta releases at least not last time I looked a day or so back. Unless one has been following all the threads here finding the right discussion containing a ppa announcement is bloody difficult.

Re: where did the grib viewer go??

To be clear. There is no beta released, yet.
Dave will announce when the first beta is available for general testing.
What we have now is more developing snapshots, no formal release of any kind.

I'm sorry you read condescension into my post. It was not intentional. Many other users read these threads and it may help a person with similar issues. It almost never helps to uninstall/reinstall especially now-a-days in Linux and Windows 10. And it can actually make it harder to diagnose problems when manual uninstall efforts obscure the root problem or, more often, cause new problems that did not yet exist.

The launchpad PPA repository has a bionic version which is what should have installed using apt. That version should work with a standard bionic release which is the distro name for LTS 18.04.

So I don't think this is an issue with OpenCPN or the grib viewer plugin. Many other users run bionic distribution and do not report any errors like this.

I hear you, though I'm pretty sure you'll agree that one of the ways to eliminate the suspicion of a bug introduced by the *upgrade* from the previous versions is to backup and then completely wipe the configs and do a fresh clean install of the new version. developers almost never have the resources available to test the upgrade process on every possible configuration.

(this thread has now been moved to a Github issue discussion)

Re: where did the grib viewer go??

I suppose you did check on double PPA's for OpenCPN.
And you also uninstalled OpenCPN, purged and reinstalled?

Just asking the obvious, sorry for that.

This issue is not related to the installation of OpenCPN. It seems to be the installation of some other library. So uninstalling/reinstalling will not do anything. And it is only reported by one person even though many are using Ubuntu Bionic distribution without problems.
