Window Size and Zooming issue in OSX

Don't know if anyone else has experienced this on Mac OSX Mojave but when I open up OpenCPN for the first time it always opens in a small window, when I maximise it the chart remains small and only fills about half the screen. I have to quit and restart to get OpenCPN to open in a full size window.

Also I have virtually no control over the zoom in/out rate with either the touchpad or the on screen zoom control. It seems to have a mind of its own and will often zoom in and out with barely any regard to what my fingers are doing. Would it be possible to code in some way to set the actual scale manually by entering numbers? As an example with a single click on the - button I go from 1:447,000 to 1:2,300,000 which is a massive jump in scales.
