World Base s57 and bsb charts

I am in search of both world base (s57 and bsb) charts that we could include with OpenCPN. If anyone knows of charts available that we can rightfully use, please let me know.

Thanks,

Will

Legally acceptable.

The US charts would be the first place to check I assume, otherwise perhaps any (marine) world map with a liberal license should do..

I don't know exactly what you are looking for?
The Blue Marble World Chart on the Pilot Charts download page
is one possibility.

I haven't run across anything, but will certainly post them if I find them.

One thing you could look into would be the Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution, Shoreline database, assembled and maintained by Dr. Paul Wessel at the University of Hawaii. This is a high resolution vector map of the world's shorelines. The map is in GMT (Generic Mapping Tool) format, so you would have to find a way to convert it to S57. The format is described on Dr. Wessel's web page, so I think it should be possible to convert it. You can find all the info here: GSHHS - A Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline Database

The format is described in the README file. More info on GMT tools is here: The GMT Home Page

As an aside, I bumped into this while installing Bluewater Racing to play around with. Bluewater Racing is a free program to do route planning and optimization based on boat polars, GRIBs, and great circle routes. It's a simpler (and probably not as good) version of what programs like Expedition and Maxsea do, although it's pretty darn good from what I can see. The author has used it to plan and navigate Transpac and other passages. It's reasonably cruiser-friendly, in that you can hand-modify your polar files to include motoring limits and speeds if you want. It's well worth the time to look at, and makes a great companion to OpenCPN. Bluewater Racing uses and includes the gshhs chart kit.

Seems to be some sort of "shareware" project, there's a free one (java) here Marine Weather

"Capcode" also has free weather routing based on Java by the way http://weather.lediouris.net/

Dave has already included a shoreline. This may be where it comes from. A bsb base map can be easily made. So, I guess an S57 base world map is what I'm after if anyone knows of one.

Thanks,

Will
