Anyone know how to remove the interior chain plate covers for inspection?

Did you ever get this done Mark? Anything to share tip wise? I'm trying to do the same thing and can't work out how to avoid hacking the cover to bits in my attempts! I'm told heat might help release the glue (Hairdryer?). I'm still not sure if I should be pulling away from the wall, or sliding the thing down? It's a Mystery!
