Helia 44 - emergency tiller

We just completed the ARC Bahamas. During the safety inspection prior to departure it was discovered that the emergency tiller could not be installed. On either side. An aluminum support angle blocked access to the opening @ the top of the rudder post. We ended up grinding the metal piece out in order to get the correct angle for insertion. Thankfully all of this was discovered and we had tools at the dock! I would hate to use it for any length of time as the engine hatch needs to remain open; very dangerous! There should at the bare minimum be an inspection cover which could be removed to insert the tiller through.Click image for larger version

Thank you for your practical observations.

The position is the same for all FPs I think. The cover is a good start but it would be a long hard time exposed as you would be in any event.

Yep - Had same problem last week. Dam silly engineering and, once inserted, an absolute b**ger to do more than hold her in a straight-ish line!
