Lavezzi Sun Shade/Curtain Ideas

Hello!

I have a 2006 Lavezzi which we have spent the past several months sailing from Seattle, WA to La Paz, BCS, Mexico. While it is freezing in Seattle, it is a lovely 75 degrees and sunny here in La Paz. Sadly, our Lavezzi is equipped for sailing colder waters and lacks any curtains or sun shade for the cabin.

It has become glaringly apparent we are going to need some curtains or other sun shade solution before we head into spring and summer. I was wondering if others in warmer latitudes can share their solutions for keeping the sun at bay.

Thank you all!
Caroline

Hello there,

We have a Lavezzi as well. I agree that the sun gets very hot in the saloon. Ours has a kind of fine mesh fixed curtains on the outside that work remarkably well. They are attached using tenax fixtures. As I am not with the boat right now I cannot tell if they are a specific brand or make, but I think any sailmaker could produce these for you. Amazing results. But visibility forward is or course diminished. This is why we leave the middle window as it it. Hope this helps

Go with the white mesh on the outside of the windows. Save you windows and make the boat much COOLER. You can buy the material from www.sailrite.com

We just installed a Phifertex + cover to our Lipari salon windows and they are working out very well, attached with ‘sands’, all available thru Sailrite

Off the wall/cheapo idea - $11.00 car window sunscreens from Wal Mart. Fixed at the top (inside of the salon) with peel and stick velcro (white to match our salon interior). I had to cut some edges to make them fit and used some of the excess to fill the portion that normally wraps around your rear view mirror, but each one covers almost the entire width of our Orana's forward portlights. We block them at the base with some pillows.

We also use some static-cling car window shades (got them in the baby section of Target, 2 for $5). They peel off easily and don't mark the glass.

Not nearly as elegant as custom shades/covers, but they are very functional...and cheap.

Good luck!

Hi,

I'm a new owner of a 2016 Helia. Could you point me in the direction of making exterior Phifertex window covers? You mentioned "sands" as attachments. Not sure what that refers to. Thanks.

Mike

My Front windows really heat up the cabin so when I did mine last year I went with a fabric that blocks a lot of light. I used...Phifertex Vinyl Sling Braque Graphite 54” Fabric from Sailrite in the U.S.

Here are some photos...

This is a photo of the cabin mid morning. As you can see there's still plenty of light.

If you don't want to go as dark as mine, I recommend 'Arizona sun supply' in the US. They have got a good range of mesh material. I previously used the 85% material. After a few years it was still as good as new.

We used ‘snads’ to attach the cover, available from Sailrite.
