Lofrans Cayman 88 Wiring

Hi All,

I have Mahe Hull No: 92 (2008) fitted with a Lofrans Cayman 88 which no longer works - solenoid just clicks. I am trying to trace the wiring from the solenoid to the winch.

Where it leaves the solenoid it is a heavy gauge (B&S 2) and disappears into a conduit headed towards the centre of the boat.

From the winch end, the wiring is a lighter gauge (B&S 6) and disappears into a conduit directly below the winch and goes through the cabin bulkhead.

My question is: Where does the wiring change gauges?

TIA

Blez

My guess is that at the windlass end you are seeing the tails to the windlass motor and at the solenoid end the boat's fixed wiring. There will be joins in between usually in the anchor locker to allow removal of the windlass for service. That's how our FP Athena is done. The joins should be accessible from the locker, maybe pushed up inside the conduit?

Yeah, I have pulled on the wires at the winch end and
nothing moves. I’ll try harder next time I’m at the boat!

It is always possible that whoever installed the windlass, spliced the motor tails to cable extensions and relied on being able to feed the cables through the conduit to the contactor.
First, I would check that the contactor is feeding volts to the windlass cables. It's not impossible that the contactor is faulty.

That Soloniod click doesn‘t mean its working.
Check Voltage at windlass, if yes its the Motor and if not solonid.
If you don‘t get voltage use a battery or starter cable directly to the windlass. If not it can be both, a burned motor often fries the solenoid too.

The connect can be also at the motor, that was case on Mine. Take off the windlass, it’s just 4 nuts. good opportunity to check base of winch for corrosion.
And add more studs, I found 4 a joke for the load that can happen. Added 3 more. Just drill hole, tap a thread into and mount stud.
