A hand held GPS would only complicate the process.
I use the Chartplotter at the helm to show me if my earth nail (anchor) is in.

Single handed anchoring in heavy conditions just requires you to go back and forth to the helm. As you practice your trips to and from the helm is less.

In most cases if it’s calm you never go back to the helm at all.

Thanks Thinwater. DotDun poses the rational question. My mistake as I thought "autopilot" but wrote "GPS". I appreciate that the collective response here satisfies my curiosity on technique.
