New and need some assistance please

Hi All

I have just started my sailing journey. I bought a boat and was not able to get anytime with the previous owner. It is a lipari 41 the previous owner was a live aboard.

There are two clutch’s marked cuni and out haul. The ropes go to the main mast but I cannot work out what they do. Any assistance woeful be appreciated.

Please see attached

Thanks in advance

They seem clearly labeled as Cunningham and outhaul. One pulls down on the luff , the other pulls out on the foot.

Although you can probably learn to sail via Google and YouTube, you would be well served to take a basic "Learn to Sail" class. You'll quickly learn a lot of terminology as well as the parts of the boat and sail plan. It would be well worth the time and money!

You need to get someone with some basic knowledge to walk you through your boat. You likely need at least a day aboard to get a basic understanding of what you have to avoid asking basic questions.

Please do not misunderstand what I am saying, asking questions is absolutely the right way to go.....it's just that you will spend days on this forum asking questions like the one you just did instead of getting knowledge first hand aboard your boat.....a way better use of every ones time.

And consider paying for said persons time if thats what you need to do, it will be money well spent.

If you have a big sail sitting on your boom you don't have inmast reefing.. If your mast looks like this you do.

Re: New and need some assistance please

Well, regarding terminology. In-mast reefing as used here is usually termed in-mast furling, because the sail is rolled up inside the mast so works similar to the headsail roller furling system. For that, the terms roller furling and roller reefing are also used interchangeably but are not the same. A headsail is not “reefed” properly on the furler unless it is designed and built to be reefed on a roll-up furler. Otherwise, it is only partially furled if not rolled in all of the way.

Folks often use the in-mast, or alternatively in-boom, roller furler to partially shorten sail, thus the system functions similar to slab reefing of the mainsail. Historically, furling is to fully bring in a sail, and reefing is to shorten it to continuing sailing in higher wind. These modern roller systems evidently perform both functions, but reefing implies the sail is shortened and properly set to continue sailing in good trim, etc. Folks often question whether the in-mast system effectively accomplishes the “good trim” criterion.

Re: New and need some assistance please

The Lipari 41 does not have in-mast furling unless it was converted since new.

consider joining a sailing club,or crewing for someone else, or take a day or 2 to learn to sail a small boat . A small boat is a great learning tool. especially a small honor

Hi Allied39, you are 100% correct in fact I have been trying to organise that. I am in Brisbane Australia and finding someone is a little difficult especially during COVID. It is however the plan and I will keep looking. Thanks for the advice
