removing gypsy on goiot windlass

I'm trying to remove the gypsy off my Goiot Windlass. It from 1999. I'm trying to put new chain on my boat, but good luck getting metric chain in the US. Not even Sailorman. Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any fasteners other than a cotter pin. Does anyone have experience here?

Re: removing gypsy on goiot windlass

I have a goiot windlass that takes 10mm chain I found a supplier on ebay and ordered 30m. The answer to your question is, the gypsey is threaded onto the axel such that the pull of the anchor rode will tignten the gypsey to the axel. Insert something into round holes in the gypsey and pull towards you or away from the pull of the anchor rode. It will be very tight and penetrating oil may be necessary. The clip you mentioned is just a safety thing.

Vetus used to import metric chain to US, but seems they don't anymore.

But metric chain is still in their catalog, so perhaps they will order it for you.

See ebay listing below for 8mm anchor chain. It is posted by donsmarine-2008. That's where I bought my chain.

Thanks Sam, Thanks ggray. I'll check those resources. Hope I don't have to take the gypsy apart. probably hasn't been done since 1999

Re: removing gypsy on goiot windlass

I sprayed the cracks between the spool and the gypsy with penetrating oil, then installed the bar, and pounded with a rubber hammer, ten pounds in each direction, and tapped the gypsy and spool with a metal hammer in every direction - did this every morning for 40 mornings. Finally, I was rewarded. I cleaned, regreased, and re-assembled. I think I need a new 10mm gypsy, but will take it to a chandlery and get an opinion. If I absolutely need one, I will need help sourcing - or will have to replace the whole windlass.
