Sheet Blocks

Has anyone found a way to improve the jib sheet blocks to give a chafe-free run of the sheets to the winches? The factory setup seems pretty mickey-mouse, IMHO.

Re: Sheet Blocks

I'll see what I can dig up. The boat is in BVI and I'm back in Canada.

Re: Sheet Blocks

Greg,

Can't put my hands on a pic right now but here's the scoop:

The Port sheet runs through a spring-mounted block on the cabin top and crosses a plastic rib on the centre-line that keeps it off the cabin top. That rib shows wear from the sheet rubbing against it which in turn means the sheet itself is being chafed. Also, as you winch in the port sheet, it can get caught on one of the jammers making it a real PITA. The starboard sheet is only slightly better as it crosses the reef lines coming our of the jammers. I've thought of elevating the blocks on some kind of base but would like to know if any Mahe owner has tried something with any success.

Re: Sheet Blocks

Install a low friction ring on the plastic rib for the port sheet guidance.

Re: Sheet Blocks

The real problem is in trying to bring the sheet across the deck... the solution they came up with isn't terrible, it's pretty much par for the course.

A better solution is possible, but it depends on how aggressive you want to get. The rub strikes were installed to keep the sheet from abrading on the deck, so you know the crown of the deck is above the fall of the line. So you need something standing proud of it to keep it off the deck.

Ideally you could remove the strikes and replace them with fairleads that will maintain enoug rise to keep the sheet off the deck, while containing it and preventing it from just flopping around. For this take a look at https://www.westmarine.com/buy/harke...EHcaAuSY8P8HAQ

Installing these on top of the strikes will work, but it will also increase the friction in the system as the line compresses a top the leads.

I am not sure what's going on with the clutches, but if I a man visualizing it correctly it's a slack line problem? In which case these will help contain it somewha, as would adding blocks.
