Yellow Discoloration on FP Sail Boats 2 Years Old and Newer

Hi FP owners My 2010 salina 48 has several large areas of yellow discoloration on the deck and interior, only on the smooth surfaces.

I have heard that there is another Salina 48, two years old and an Eleuthera 60, one year old in the Seychelles with the same problems.

Any others out there?

Tks

Re: yellow discoloration on FP sail boats 2 years old and newer

We have a 2010 Mahe, and have noticed in the last 5 months some light yellowing on smooth surfaces, along the hulls topsides, (along under life lines) and also along the cap edge.

I thought it was oxidation or caused from UV. Were just getting ready to do our first polish, hope it comes off. It's light, but definitely noticeable. I would not expect it in a strip like that.

FP paid to have the two boats in the Seychelles polished, we are in the process of getting them to pay for ours.

My concern is: what is the cause and will it come back?

Will keep you advised.

We had the same problem with a Boat we owned

It is mould releasing wax which turns yellow with exposure to UV.

The more intense your UV, the faster it turns yellow.

In my experience, you can polish all you like, it won't get rid of it. It simply hides the problem.

The only solution we found was oxacylic acid, followed by a stiff polish. Ours was in the non skid and smooth. We ended up in court when Builder washed there hands of it (our deck actually started to crumble).

Good luck, I hope you have a better experience than we did.

I have had some yellowing (polishing mitigates it), and the explanation I've heard was that it is gelcoat that was applied after coming out of the mold, and cured in the presense of air.

FWIW, we had the same issue on our Orana as we were crossing the Pacific ... somehow, magically, it just "went away." Perhaps the wax that some/many blame finally evaporated off ...

Good luck -- it was definitely noticeable and annoying while it was there.
