1976 Westerly 36 for $23,900 - Bluewater Boat

Hello,
I have a 1976 Westerly 36 for sale for $23,900. Its an English built boat, built for sailing the often rough English Channel. Stout and able with all the goodies like radar, watermaker, 3 solar panels, inverter, ssb w/ tuner.
Its a center cockpit boat and anyone that knows anything about Westerly´s knows this is a very good deal for a 36. The next one available on the market is 45k.
This one is located in La Paz, Mexico so its handly for a pacific crossing.

To see pictures, go to the Yachtworld listing and you can see it at:

1976 Westerly CC Ketch A vela Barco en venta - www.yachtworld.es

It was just listed yesterday, so don´t miss out!

Happy Sailing
Ron

This boat has been for sale, by "Mazatlan Marine Centre", La Paz office, for a long time. The price was reduced to $14,500usd, last February 14, 2011. Not trying to bamboozle your fellow forum members, I hope.

Re: 1976 Westerly 36 for $23,900 - bluewater boat

Hello, yes this boat was the same boat that was for sale for 45k, then a month later, down to 35k then 25k for a week then finally $14,500. When i saw it, i jumped on it as another buyer in LaPaz was making an offer the same day it dropped down to 14,500. Two offers came in that same day it dropped and so to be sure i would get the boat, i offered more than the asking price.
The seller had to rush home and had no choice to sell cheaply. The boat is much more worth that what he had to sell it for - unfortunately, but he was in a rush to go home and had no choice. But i dont have the big rush he has. Besides, i added a dinghy, outboard, bicycle, and a bunch of boating equipment that i brought down with me. And i did a lot of work to the boat while i was living on it, so it still is a very good value.
cheers

Re: 1976 Westerly 36 for $23,900 - bluewater boat

Hi Ron,

what work have you done on the boat since you bought it and what other boating equipment did you add?

Have any of the jobs been completed that are listed in the advertisement as being in progress (ie: Adler-Barbour cold machine, Icom 700, Power Survivor 35 12V watermaker, Lazyjacks for main.)

If not completed, how far along are they?

Re: 1976 Westerly 36 for $23,900 - bluewater boat

Hello,

The watermaker, ssb, refrigeration and lazy jacks are not installed yet. I dont plan to do that as I have been working on other things.

Since i have owned it, i have purchased a dinghy, 6hp johnson (1991), a bicycle. Those will go with the boat. I have changed the hoses for the cockpit drains while adding an access panel to get to those seacocks.
I have taken apart the brake for the pedestal and got that free´d up and working. I have done mostly cleaning inside. It was very dirty. I bought a nice hepa filter bagless portable vaccuum cleaner for the boat. It operates off of 110volt, but uses the inverter. I already pulled out 3 canister fulls of dirt and cat hair. Its very clean now but took 2 weeks to clean full day. Now i am beginning to work on the systems, water, fuel, etc.

There are 4 water tanks, totalling 125 gallons of water and 3 fuel tanks totalling 56 gallons of fuel. I labelled the tanks and fillers so no one mistakes what goes where. The last owner dumped water into the diesel tank so i had to siphon the water out. Thats all set and ready to go. Now i want to focus to cleaning the bilge. That is all i am going to be able to do because i am leaving to go to the USA in a few days.
I just told the broker today to lower the price to 19.9k just so it sounds better, but it will be firmer priced.
Also, learned today that the boat is built to lloyds specs. Thats a nice selling feature.

cya

The boating equiptment i added are a a lot of smaller things that filled up two suitcases. Like a nice cockpit awning made out of sail material. A really nice bosuns chair, complete sail repair kit with palm, needles and sail material. Nice snatch blocks, just on and on.

cheers,
Ron

The boat is built to Lloyds specifications. Not many boats can say that!

Re: 1976 Westerly 36 for $23,900 - Bluewater Boat

I am a westerly owner in europe,
strong boats that will take you everywhere in a seakindly manner.
Well looked after or refitted boats would sell in Europe for twice as much,
but cause of the fact, that she was handed over to you in non-EU waters,
she can´t be taken back to europe for more than a couple of month,
without paying VAT again, and maybe
you will have Certification-Problems, so called CE labelling.
Otherwise, or if she still is sailing under a EU-flag and hasn-t been away
for over 3 years, i would recommend
to bring her into european territories, Martinique for example, and try
selling her there (for way more).
Best of luck
Rainer

Re: 1976 Westerly 36 for $23,900 - Bluewater Boat

Hello x-ray,
Thanks for the nice information. It was very interesting hearing what goes on on the other side of the pond regarding these boats.
My particular boat has been in mexico for the past 5 years that I know of, but has been registered (in those 5 years) as an American boat, so I guess I am out of luck with that scenario. I guess is just has to stay an American boat.
But no big loss. I bought it at a low price so I can sell it at a low price. So, no problems for me. However, I should note, I am accepting down to 17k (with an inflatable and a outboard motor, 10-speed bike and added gear) so she is getting solidly in the "bargain" category.
thanks
Ron
