2 Multihull Slips Available for Winter in NC

Many boats further north like to winter in the Pamlico Sound/Neuse River area. Our marina near New Bern, Northwest Creek, has just changed policy and will allow our slip to be used while we are cruising this winter. There are two catamaran slips available, one beginning about Nov, 1 and ours 2 to 4 weeks later. We both plan to return about June 1.

If you need a slip for the winter, contact Northwest Creek at 252.638.4133.

For what it’s worth, we hear the Sheraton is boosting rates considerably to drive out live-aboards and have slips to sell with their adjacent condos now under construction.

George...won't boats docking there for the winter have to pay NC personal property tax?
What is that per thousand in New Bern if you know?

I think only NC residents pay the property tax, but I am not a tax expert. I think the rate is $0.635 per thou.

I am not, however, qualified to answer. Bud Ellis, Marina Manager, could probably tell you more.

Here where I am that would be per $100 still not a huge tax. At a per thou rate I would trade that any day. The property insurance in NC should beat that a lot in a few years.

Paul, that could be per $100. I think other folks with similar boats are paying about $800 so I am probably wrong. Since we go south in winter and aren't in the slip 1/1 each year, we don't pay the tax.

That's about what we pay here when you get over 9 tons. The local watermen still are a political power so if you have a boat you could cruise it's less than the normal $1 per $100 that they charge for cars and smaller boats. We have the same first of the year rule too. It's not worth the savings to be some place else right now. It's not bad given we pay half the property tax we used to pay on a nicer house worth half as much. Until I can cut loose from the house I still have that burden. After Minnesota, Virginia is a walk in the park. I shoveled the walk twice in the past 5 years. I can still do that and I still have the tool (my wife uses it for mulch in the spring).
