Re: 35 to 41 ft Cruising Sailboat

I like the 37 Tartan good looking boat, what is a good diesel Kentb ? I had a 25 hp Volvo Penta on my 36c.

This is a cool boat! We sailed in an extreme shoal draft boat for about 10 years & it's a blast. For gunkholing in Florida there's nothing like it.

Looks like it's the base of the table.

The board goes up inside the table base.

We need to add a lazy jack system to help with mainsail handling. Ours has a Westerbeke 40 ( most came with the 50). A four cylinder diesel like this one is quite easy to live with as they are relatively smooth runners. She motors at 6.5 knots in calm seas. Easily sails at speeds exceeding 7-8 knots. Also most T37C's came with 3 speed primary winches which is nice. You may easily find one between Florida and the Chesapeake Bay area.
No matter what you go with,
Make sure you have a nice 4 cylinder diesel
Make sure the sail plan is easy to work with.
When you walk the decks be aware of the surface -is it spongy or soft? Maybe even walk around an extra time barefooted to check.
Eventually when you are ready to "pull the trigger" get it surveyed. Don't let surprises foil your desire to sail!
ummm, ken and op, I have recently bought a beautiful shoal draft 36 ' cruiser with a 3 cylinder Perkins engine that is excellent... great access,..quiet, smooth, dependable, and uses less fuel than a 4 cylinder... you certainly don't have to have a 4 cylinder...just sayin...

Contact Massey Yachts in Braedenton. We bought our Catalina 42 from them and I have to say that we had the best experience with them and we know others from up here in NY who also dealt with them and they were fantastic. They know their boats and even after the sale was done, they helped folding sails and moving the boat for some repairs that needed to be done. I can't say enough about them. I know they usually have a lot of boats for sale and you can probably see a lot of them at once.

I had thought of recommending Freedoms too, with their ease of handling. But I understand that the ones with the sails that are not on tracks could be difficult to get down at times. Any Freedom owners advise on that one?

Re: 35 to 41 ft Cruising Sailboat

Ron,

If you are going to single-hand, look at the Tartan 33, 34-2 or 34c. Those boats all have sail plans that can be managed by one. I am 60 and have no issues with my boat. There are days when I am glad I didn't go larger- but those are also the days no one else is on the ocean

When I was shopping I ended up not buying the 34c because of the centerboard. It was one more thing to maintain. Both the 33 and 34-2 have the Scheel Keel.

There is a 34-2 for sale in Bradenton 1985 Tartan Sloop sailboat for sale in Florida that might be worth a look.

Be sure to check the deck area where the chain plates go through for moisture.

We LOVED our Tartan 33 and only upgraded to the Catalina 42 because baby #4 was on her way and we had no more space for cruising with another baby. We go out on the boat for weeks at a time so needed something bigger. But that Tartan (hull #10) was a fantastic boat for the years we had her and I understand she's still going strong in Rhode Island.

Re: 35 to 41 ft Cruising Sailboat

Ron S,

You might want to look into the Island Packet 31 and 32 models. Friends of mine sold their Pearson 36 and bought a used IP 31 and ended up with more living space and storage below.

I can highly recommend Whiteaker Yacht Sales in Bradenton. They sold my IP 380 for me. I see on their website that they currently have four IP 32s and one IP 31 listed for sale.
