Limping back can be done as long as the boat is still 'right side up' and afloat

I'm going to assume the shark comment is a joke

Where to start and what is a 'smart move' is different for everybody. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with - piece of mind is worth something, imho

Re: 40' Catamaran (in SE Asia)

There are several good sailing yachts here in the Philippines! I have several friends here that retired from cruising and have their boats here in the marina/boatyard.
But a multihull with 4 cabins and 2 heads for 100K won't be easy to find unless it needs a lot of TLC ... Good luck to you anyway!

yeaa slowly beginning to believe that..
maybe we could get away with a mid 30 footer... 3 cabins/1 head
seems to be more of those within our budget..

also we are in no rush, and don't mind putting in work or roughing it..

more options in the Philippines vs Malaysia/Thailand?

If you don't bring the rookie captain but sail the boat yourself, you'll probably need less room and could buy a smaller but better maintained boat that actually fits your budget.

Something I would consider, anyway -- fwiw.
