42' cruising catamaran

42’ cruising catamaran designed by Bernd Kohler MANTApage, built professional by RK Marine (UK) in wood/epoxy in 1988.
I bought Lucia 2010 in the Netherlands and sailed her in 2011 together with my son and one additional crew member via Horta across the Atlantic to Canada. She is an excellent, stable and comfortable sea boat with ample living space. I am her proud third owner but don’t have the time to really enjoy her and do her justice. Since I got diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2012, I have only spend three weeks on board. Lucia was completely overhauled by her second owner in 2009, including new engines & sail drives, electronics and a new two pack paint job. Since then I have installed numerous new equipment and Lucia received a new antiskid paint job in 2012 as well. Although the stbd aft deck could be repainted again. She is in need of a new main sail and new running rigging should be installed before the mast could be re-stepped. I did remove the railing to redo all the railing bases in wood epoxy. But it was getting to cold and damp in fall 2013, so I was not able to repaint these and install the railing again.

Is that a giant subwoofer in the saloon?

Zumsel - beautiful boat!
I noticed you had saildrives listed but in the beached picture, I see the prop sticking out the side toward the center. Can you explain? I see a second prop in the center which I think must be the dingy outboard.

Re: 42' cruising catamaran

Where is the boat located in Nova Scotia? Is it on the hard or in the water? What is the bridge deck clearance? Would you be able to post a few more pics showing the engine installations, the saildrives, the galley and a few more of the interior?

@ Colemj
Yes that is a subwoofer in the salon.

@ Sailorman Ed
The engines on this design are below the hull flooring installed, more or less close to the center of gravity and the sail drives stick out to the side in a slide angle below the bridge deck. And what you see on the picture coming down from the bridge deck is not an outbouad but rather the leg for the aquagen.

@ Mattyc
The boat is in the water in a small fishing community in Guysbourough County at the Goverment wharf over the winter. I don't have any pictures showing the engine installation. Bridge deck clearance is around 60-65 cm. But the bridge deck is rather short not having any berth up front on the bridge deck. Sure there is some slamming, but on all the miles accross the Atlantic that did never bother anyone of us.

When Lucia was originally built the whole process was well documented in the magazin Multihull International. I have this article series as pdf but these are seven big files. Anybody interested, I can send them via email

Re: 42' cruising catamaran

I just found the sales video from 2010 on youtube again which shows more of the living room and also the engine installation. Some of the technical information's in this video are not up to date anymore since I constantly upgraded Lucia.

Enjoy

Re: 42' cruising catamaran

Too bad I didn't find this before we came to Tampa (from Ohio) to shop for a cat. I'm tempted to buy it sight unseen, it looks that nice in the pictures. Do you know of the difficulties of transferring ownership to a US citizen?

Bill,
I can't think of any problem in passing the ownership to a US citizien. I bought the boat in the Netherlands and didn't had any problems bringing Lucia into Canada. So pretty much the same situation like yours. Should be a very common thing. The easiest way would be to involve a sales broker from my side so that he could take care that all the legal requirements would be fullfilled and you would feel save doing an kind of financial transactions.

And thanks, yes she looks nice and I know already that it will be a very sad day for me when we both have to part.

Re: 42' cruising catamaran

Thanks for your reply. I'm unsure now what to do. We have a 36' PDQ near here we want to see but I hesitate to commit to anything before we see your boat too. Let me think about it a day or so. Meanwhile, connect with me at humbugbill@gmail.com. That's an address I never use and can fill with spam and I don't care.

William, you didn't say your nationality. If you are US be aware that there is a 15% GST/HST (sales) tax in Nova Scotia and I'm pretty sure it applies to used boats. If you buy it and it is in NS then you have to pay. If you can move it to Maine prior to sale then you will be subject to whatever state fees you register it in. Plus the 1.5% US import fee.

You need to check this.

The boat is on YW, too.

Re: 42' cruising catamaran

Thanks Crabby, can I call you that? If it gets that far, we'll have a marine lawyer or else someone who will lay that all out. It is stated somewhere that the VAT has been paid but I don't understand how all that works since we don't have that in the US. I do appreciate your interest and concern.

Re: 42' cruising catamaran

Bill, the owner bought the boat in the Netherlands so the VAT which is the Euro sales tax was paid by a previous owner. This only gets paid once in an objects life unlike here where sales tax could apply many times if a boat is sold many times. It means nothing to the rest of us. If a European bought the boat and wants to take it back there they could save about 20% MOL on tax if all the papers are there so it means a lot to them. The VAT savings could help non Europeans who take a boat back to Europe and keep it there long term. Even if the boat is flagged elsewhere the officials will apply VAT to it if it is there too long. However, Europeans have the right to a VAT refund if they can prove the boat is flagged elsewhere and leaves the Eurozone. Just because the VAT was paid doesn't mean that it wasn't refunded.

I believe the price is in Canadian dollars so US price would be about 10%less.

You could save some bucks by just getting a US buyers broker from one of the big cat sellers. The seller commission would pay his share so there is no extra for you for legal fees and they should know what to do.

Good luck.

PS You can call me Crabby. I've been called worse.

What seller commission? - looks a private sale by owner to me.
