47' Mast

Hi Y'all; I lost the mast on my Islander 37 recently while on the hard. Gale force winds collapsed a jack stand. It slowly went over and bent the mast in half. As I salvaged the mast hardware, I realized it was not the original mast, but maybe 3 ft shorter than the orginal. So, to match the salvaged stays, etc. I need something 46-48 long, keel-stepped,single spreader. The extrusion of the wreck had cross-sectional dimensions of 4.5" x 8.5". Something 5' x7" could work alright. I need something pretty affordable. I'm talking about a 1970 boat, and shipping up to Lake Superior is going to hurt, too. I'll also consider fabricating a new one if I can find a cheap extrusion. thanks!

Re: 47' Mast

I recommend repairing the existing mast by cutting and adding an internal splice. The splice will be stronger than the rest of the mast but that is OK. Manufacturers have done in commonly in the past.

Re: 47' Mast

Thanks Jim, I won't haul the pieces to the recycling folks yet, but right now the tube is in four pieces. A couple have some extra bends, and then there are parts I cut out--the mast head, where the winches and stays were mounted . These places had the aluminum doubled with welded on patches. So,it's already become a butcher job,but it's probably best to hold on to the remains. I have to be prepared for the shock of what a replacement will cost. Thanks, Paul

Re: 47' Mast

I'd goto the Spars Main Page site and see if you can ID your existing mast. If all you need is an extrusion, it may not be all that expensive.

Here are some other mast dealers >>> Sail Buyers Guide: Aluminum Masts & Booms

Re: 47' Mast

After almost a year of looking I got mine on Ebay. If you are in more of a hurry you could try Sailorman in Fl as well as putting the word out at yards in your area. Spend a couple of hours calling every yard and sail loft in your area. If it is broken in 4 pieces I would not think it was fixable? No insurance by you or the yard?

Re: 47' Mast

Well, looked on eBay and there is a 47', keel stepped mast for sale. Bad news, it's in Florida.

Re: 47' Mast

He could contact boat transporters and see if they would bring it up with another boat. They are more than happy to find a way to make a few extra bucks for a run they are making anyway and boat transporters know how to handle a mast, worth a try.

Re: 47' Mast

Spend some time researching road bridge extrusion suppliers. I have seen a number of home built masts, where the materials was so sourced.

Re: 47' Mast

Hi. I have two 47' masts. One is from a 36 Islander Freeport and is 9 1/2" x 5" (oval shaped) with a single set of spreaders. It has been stripped and mostly sanded but I do have the rigging for it and a nice boom if needed. The other is 7 3/4" x 4 3/4" (egg shaped...can't think of the proper word to describe it). Both are in Florida. Thanks

Re: 47' Mast

Greetings. The egg shape would be an easy fit. What is your price? My biggest concern will be shipping, and that's why I'm checking out he suggestion from Blue Stocking--to come up with industrial materials for a home-made replacement. If I can afford a rady made replacement,I'd love it. Thanks!
