I would be careful about buying used Autohelm computers or head units and hooking them up to your otherwise working system. Some of the early versions of the computers have inadequate fusing according to the techs at Raymarine who helped me sort mine out, and, if they are shorted internally, will blow the control head units. I bought a supposedly "working" computer on Ebay and had this happen to me. I was told that the head unit can do the same thing to the computer if it is shorted in some of the older units.

Since it's impossible to buy new parts for these older Autohelms I cannot see any other choice than to buy used. It also seems hard to understand that a display which has worked flawlessly for twenty years would suddenly begin to ruin associated equipment. Equipment you cannot use anyway if you don't buy used gear.

Hi Alan

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this. It is not a wireless remote, so there really is no base station. You just connect the wires directly to the computer.

It didn't say that much as I remember it. Just the course "C280" or something. Now it doesn't say anything at all since it's dead.

Well, my unit is the 6000+ and when it stopped working there was no sign that it was bad because the control head indicated a course. It was the power to the RAM that did not work... If your unit or anyone else has a 6000+ that does not work - the computer is bad - but powers the RAM I would like to see if I can fix mine by swaping the main chip inside the computer. Thanks

It turned out that the computer may(?) work since it turned out to be a faulty wire on the control unit. But now since I've sold the control unit I cannot really test this theory. Maybe it was a mistake buying a new pilot...
