Does anyone know it it can be simply taken off, unwired, and control the AP with just the handheld control?

It depends on if you have the ST version of the 6000 and which remote you have. Some of the ST remotes have full control and can function as control head. If you have the non ST then no, I think you need the control head.

The ST600R, according to the manual, just needs a course computer and a drive unit. I believe that the other wired remotes will not control in the absence of a control head.
