Re: Cal 246: Ready To Cross Oceans!

Thanks Sara,

I just spoke with the PO who put it well, "you simply can't get a boat that sails as well, motors as well and is as livable for the money as a Cal 246"

The PO has a friend who he worked with in San Francisco as a sailing instructor who has build two 50' trimarans, a 40' foot steel boat and refit a Santa Cruz 40 for cruising with multiple Pacific Crossings just chose a CAL 46 for his next sailing adventure.

Re: Cal 246: Ready To Cross Oceans!

I agree it was a strange way for Dave Toombs to come out of the gates..but you know, I don't mind a good discussion

on the bleach bottle...well I agree the lines of the cal 2-46 are not as sexy as some boats, say compared to a racing boat. BUT remember NO boat does it all. The Cal 2-46 is Cruiser!! A safe and well built one with lots of awesome space below.

Bill Lapworth was an undisputed genius designer and he retired on a Cal 2-46...his favorite boat. The Cal 40 was the only undisputed entry into the hall of fame. Mr Toombs are you saying all Cals are cheap????

On the cheapness I disagree wholeheartedly and can back it up with some examples, can you back up your claim?

examples:

-Almost all of the Cal246s are still actively cruising

-the Cal 46 sails FAST for a type of boat she is, doesn't go to weather as well as a fin keel but reaching we average over 150 a day easily.

-stand up engine room!!! so awesome

-heavy layup...not going anywhere. strong.

- I have never heard of a case of a cal 46 loosing a rudder

-can motor better than almost any other boat that sails that well, which is not a reason I would by a sailboat but in reality most cruisers need to motor sometimes...when I had to go into a 30 knot wind with my 2 young kids on board I was happy I was on a Cal 46

-the perkins 236, probably the greatest marine diesel ever!

- the brightest least dark boat with the port lights and we are safe with a strong layup and special frames and polycarbonate windows...storm shudders are the other option

- the boat is well balanced...can sail itself

I can name a few more but we will see what mr toombs has to say..

does anyone else have good examples?...bad?

I am open to an intelligent discussion

Re: Cal 246: Ready To Cross Oceans!

It's good to consider the source...

Mr. Toombs has a taste for leaky teakies and modern clorox bottles... to each their own.

Google is always so interesting.

That boat is awesome. I first got to see a Cal 2-46 when a couple whom I have been emailing back and forth from this cruisers forum has stayed in my slip
At esprit marina here in marina del Rey for a week while I had my boat on the hard last November for bottom painting. I was really impressed by the boat. The layout is all so sensible and there is so much space. It's no wonder many
Owners are live aboards. They are a wonderful couple from the PNW. they are now hanging out in baja California. I told them that they are living my dream
That I too would like to do that in 4 years! I want to retire young

But when they saw my boat. They were immediately in love with it. They wanted to BUY it, indoor steering. Huge main saloon ( trust me I ve had people take a tour inside the boat and one lady said " this is bigger than my old apartment in NY")

It is said that ,my boat's layout designed is some 50 years ahead of its time
Is no wonder the legendary hall of fame boat designer bill lap worth
With all his money and his Rhode island mansion had one built ( hull #7 now in Florida ) and had it shipped to RI and had prefered to live in it till he died. Also mr jensen the owner- builder of cal boats also had one built and lived in it til he died

As for me, well, I too can't wait to live in mine. Hopefully in 2 years when my 16 year old goes off to college and I can just rent out this big house in Pasadena
I share with him. I can't wait to be a live aboard. Off course it will have all the comforts of home like satellite TV with big HD flat screen TV, fireplace,
Vacuflush head with separate shower etc. then later I can take my floating home to Miami, med, south pacific etc (hopefully with someone). I feel more connected with nature whenever I stay in my boat. Unlike my static land homes, the boat gracefully moves on the water and it's ALIVE!

I have been trying to contact all Cal cruising 46 owners. Only 14 were made
And 98 of the Cal2-46 version

If you have a chance please check out on google Cal 46 and read a little of its
History. It's mind blowing

Thx for returning a letter
Btw. I looked at your photos.... Very nice and good taste

That flushed deck is the bomb.... Less windage, roomier etc

Is 4.3 your GPA? I specially like the "eyes" shot

Dave toombs

I wholeheartedly and respectfully disagree with your characterization of " cheap".
When I bought my Cal cruising 46 almost 5 years ago, the nationally renown surveyor has stated that it would cost $750,000 to replace the boat! This is 2008 price

As for the build quality? Well let me tell you I have gone to look and carefully examine and analyze boats all across the USA FROM ANNAPOLIS MARYLAND TO SAN DIEGO TO MIAMI AND OAKLAND CALIDORNIA I would rather be sailing in this cal 46 in a gale than be in one of those Flimsy mass produced boats made nowadays with parts all made in china

My Cals Perkins engine was made in England, auto pilot in Norway, mast and rigging in massachussets, instrumentations in Germany, ground tackle in Belgium, thick solid ( no cost - saving coring with foams or balsa) epoxy ( not the cheap inferior polyester or vinyl ester) fiberglass hull
In Costa Mesa California, vanity marble counter in aft head in Italy,
Solid stainless steel portlights, high end USA made polycarbonate pilothouse windows...... I can go on and on

And you say cheap? Hardly my friend. This is a luxurious, solid well made
Blue water floating home that has revolutionized yacht racing designs
And has beaten many boats in the transpac races and which ( its predecessor Cal 40) is a boat design in Hall of fame.

Re: Cal 246: Ready To Cross Oceans!

I had the honor of knowing Captain Elmer Adams of "Summer Breeze", a Cal 2-46 and sailed with him in the channels of the Islands several times. Just before his passing he asked me to sail the boat to Honolulu to be shown by a broker. His health was to the point where he couldn't sail any longer and I agreed.
He and his wife Judy had done the South Pacific with her and he had sailed from the east coast through the canal and on to Hawaii single-handed.
Very comfortable boat and I loved that old Perkins engine which started every time even though was old and hard used.
Areas of concern are the diesel fuel tanks which should be checked if they haven't been replaced.
It was a long step up from cockpit to cabin top and that was the only design issue I could see with the boat. A great liveaboard with lots and lots of space.

You and many others I have talked to attest
To the build quality and superb sailing
And handling characteristics
Of these very well made boats
That Are still to this date circling the globe
As of this email

Some who are not familiar with these boats

Re: Cal 246: Ready To Cross Oceans!

Cal 2-46 performs better than one would expect. Lapworth drew a good hull. Cal's are pretty solid production boats but will have the issues we're all used to seeing with boats from that era. Buying one that is already refit and well equipped is usually a better way to go than doing it yourself.

i think the newbee poster may be confusing the Cal 46 with another boat that starts with a "C" that came in a 45' and was not of comparable quality to the Cal. Generally bad form to make your first post one denigrating someone else's boat.
