Re: cheap Westsail 32 project on EBAY

I don't know what it is but I'm pretty sure it's not a westsail. To start with westsails chainplates aren't molded in.

400 kit boats were sold. Some had decks and bulkheads others were owner supplied

For the price, that looks like a decent boat for the right person. If we didn't already have our boat I'd have a look at it.

I agree that a lot of kit boats were sold. But even if it were sold as the hull only it doesn't fit. The chainplates for the backstay are molded in. this wasn't done on westsails, the stern isn't right, the bulworks aren't right, and there is no rise toward the stern as is typical of westsails.

Have Wheel of fortune on. Looked up and the backdrop was a westsail moored in the bay.

Re: cheap Westsail 32 project on EBAY

I love Westsails, have owned 2 and currently live aboard and sail a W28. If you look closely at this vessel, it has the W32 sheerline. I think the original builder somehow acquired a W32 hull and "customized" it from there.....its got alot of quirky modifications and is quite ugly.....but it might be the qeodesic domes of offshore vessel design....

Hi guys. The boat is up North...and I am down South. I will get the hull number for all the boating experts on the forum.
She is definitely a Westsail hull. I have the USCG Doc number...but forgot to jot down the hull number when I was up there this weekend.

also.....just for the record. I'be been a sailor for 10 years and have owned 3 Flickas , 1 Nor'Sea 27, 1 Westsail 28 , and now have a Westsail 32.
I like heavy , beamy cruising boats , and have completely re-built 1 of the Flickas and The Nor'Sea.
In my very humble opinion....Melba is completely sound. Yes...she's a kit , and yes home-built , and has a very unique rudder system...but she was also very purposely built to cross oceans...which she has proven.

look closely...it is a Westsail hull. The owner bonded the chainplates in glass. It is strange...yes I know....but it is a Westsail hull.

Talking Re: cheap Westsail 32 project on EBAY

I had a conversation with Bud Taplin at Worldcruiser/Westsail this morning...and showed him the listing. He agreed it is a Westsail 32 hull...and also said she looks built to handle anything. I will get the hull number on Friday when I am back up North.

Re: cheap Westsail 32 project on EBAY

Not to get too picky about this, but the HIN on the eBay listing for this 1980 Westsail is WSSK03680270. Y'all can decode that number as well as I can, but let me just mention that there is (or was recently)for sale a 1975 WS32, Hull # 368, that was definitely not this boat. Also, Westsail Corp. was founded in 1971.

Re: cheap Westsail 32 project on EBAY

Guys...I made up the hull number so I could list it on Ebay...because I forgot the number. Is it me...or are there a lot of paranoid folks on this site.
I will get the hull number off the hull...when I get up North this weekend. She is a Westsail.....and she's legal.
