Re: Garmin AIS 600 transponder

I think after all this conversation and your point about not wanting my own MMSI on a unit I no longer have that's what I'll do.

How can you reassign mmsi ?? They're a function of the ship not the owner. You can change the data held against them ok.

FWIW my current MMSI has moved with me. It was assigned to me by the FCC when I applied for my operator's license and station (ship) license and I updated it with the new boat information when I purchased the boat. I also added equipment to the MMSI like the SSB, EPIRB, AIS, etc.

Disclaimer: USA INFO ONLY BOAT US MMSI

OK, sometimes yes and sometimes no. To be more precise it is a function of the radio/ais/equipment not the ship. If you sell your boat and take the mmsi equipment with you the information tied to the unit needs to be changed. If you sell the boat and leave the equipment you need to release the mmsi number so the next owner can use it since all the hardware is programed for it.

If the number is just tied to a AIS unit, then it is easy to unregister the unit and let the next guy have it.

If you have a FCC MMSI number that is a whole different story. I believe you can surrender the radio station license and the MMSI though.

Here is some FAQ's from Boat US

Here are the Garmin setup and diagnostic screens. You can see the very large button that says SAVE DATA TO AIS600.

Re: Garmin AIS 600 transponder

Sorry to burst your bubble JDives, but once entered, MMSI numbers can not be changed except by returning the unit to the factory. The Govt requires this in order to get approval to sell an ASI in the US.

I recently had a new Si-Tex ASI transponder installed for $600. It came with software that allowed me to enter all the boat data incl my MMSI number, but there was also a warning that an MMSI # could be entered only once. Everything else could be changed multiple times.

Re: Garmin AIS 600 transponder

So what was the final consensus on this? Can the MMSI be changed by the end user once it has been written to the device?

Garmin tells me in writing that any end user of a previously set device can only send the device to garmin and they will programm it free of charge.

It is said that there is a little known secret method to doing a factory reset that can be done by the end user. Can anyone advise what it is?

Re: Garmin AIS 600 transponder

MMSI number is issued to an individual, not a boat, by the FCC. This number can be programmed by you only ONE time, to an AIS unit that has never been programmed before. After it has been programmed ONCE, it can ONLY be reprogrammed again by the factory. No exceptions, No tricks.
Your MMSI number is issued to you, and is used by you alone on any other equipment where your MMSI number is needed. It is your responsibility to remove this number from your equipment when you sell it, give it away, or whatever else you do with it. Once again, this number is nontransferable to another individual or boat. However you come about getting an AIS unit, if it is already programmed with an MMSI number, then the only way you will be able to FULLY use the unit is by having the factory reprogram it for you with your FCC MMSI number.
You can change all the other info on the AIS without assistance, just not the MMSI number.
