They are discontinued but will be supported for many many years, even the 3000 series plotters are still supported/updated.

Yes, and true. ..exactly what the Garmin tech support told me. No worries there, esp. considering the 740 is both NMEA 0183 and 2000 compatible.

Says Garmin in this link, but pretty sure it's Airmar, anyway just 5200 the housing to the inside of the hull if you have a solid hull no core, fill it with antifreeze and it works really, really well with no degradation that I could see.
Gives you a real fish finder / bottom machine, great for finding "wrecks" to dive etc., and no hole in the boat
Will this give you fishfinder display with a 740? I thought they would only show a numerical depth.

No, both my 740S and now my Zeus both have a "fish finder" display and I believe dual frequency Xducer 50 and 200 kHz I believe.
Now they are not Chirp quality, but if you know how to interpret you can tell bottom type etc. and a sunken boat or similar shows up really well. You can have a dedicated Sonar screen, or split screen with either Radar or Chart.
On the 740 it did Radar overlay on the chart screen very well, I don't know how it did that without a heading sensor, but it did it very well. Zeus requires you to buy a separate heading sensor.

I have the 740s installed but just splashed and have not had a chance to get any real world use of the system. The manual for the 740 does say you need a heading sensor to properly use the radar overlay function but I think it will get a reasonable heading input from the GPS as long as you're in motion and holding a reasonably steady course.
